  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of nursing principles, practices, standards and techniques, and applies this knowledge in accordance with Sky Lakes policies and procedures and within laws and regulations governing nursing practice in the State of Oregon.
  • Maintains overall responsibility for patient care in the ED. Functions as a care manager/caregiver by assessing the patient’s condition and nursing needs; demonstrates patients plan of care by setting outcomes; implements appropriate nursing actions to meet the patient’s physical, emotional, spiritual, social and intellectual needs. Promotes healing by maintaining a peaceful, orderly, and clean environment.
  • Assigns and supervises patient care tasks to team members within respective practice parameters. Evaluates, corrects, directs, redirects care and staff assignments based on patient needs, outcomes, and staffing activity. Identifies and communicates staffing needs per Nursing Department policies, patient acuity, and professional judgment, reporting inadequate staffing to management. Follows up by evaluating patient progress.
  • Ensures nursing care is delivered effectively and efficiently, and that medical regimes are followed as prescribed by physicians in collaboration with other disciplines. Maintains quality and efficiency standards and recommends improvements.
  • Participates with healthcare team members in educating patients and families throughout the hospital experience, preparing them for discharge, and reinforcing continued healthcare through teaching or referrals to case management/social services for community follow-up.
  • Maintains awareness of legal aspects of nursing, ensuring decisions and documentation are within the RN scope of practice. Reports work performance issues, policy violations, or misconduct by non-RN staff to management.
  • Provides ongoing education to hospital staff through in-services and individual orientations regarding patient care and healthcare procedures.
  • Attends departmental and other meetings as requested and is accountable for the information provided.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of emergency nursing principles, protocols, and procedures, applying this knowledge per Sky Lakes Emergency Department Standards of Care.
  • Assumes department-specific change nurse roles and responsibilities when accepting the charge nurse differential.
Qualifications
  • Required: Basic nursing skills; willingness to work varied hours, flexible schedules, and every other weekend; high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Basic knowledge of psychosocial concepts, problem-solving skills, and recent emergency or critical care practice experience.
Physical and Mental Demands

Must be able to adapt emotionally, physically capable of stooping, bending, reaching, lifting 50+ pounds, and standing/walking throughout shifts. Must practice safe body mechanics.
