Job summary

Boone County Hospital in Boone, IA, is seeking a full‑time Registered Nurse to provide direct nursing care 36 hours per week. Shift is Days/Evenings, 12:00pm–12:00am, Monday–Thursday with occasional weekends.

Salary Scale: $32.50-$46.15

POSITION SUMMARY

Provide direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process, perform technical nursing functions, and uphold the standards of practice of a professional nurse.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process and technical nursing functions.
  • Utilize critical thinking and evidence-based practice to facilitate the nursing process in patient care.
  • Ensure compliance with the Iowa Nurse Practice Act and other regulatory standards.
  • Perform according to the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Consider the age, growth, and development of each patient when planning, teaching, and providing care.
  • Document and maintain data in electronic and paper patient records.
  • Explain procedures and treatments to patients to gain cooperation, understanding, and allay apprehension.
  • Act as a patient advocate.
  • Apply teaching/learning concepts to patient and family education.
  • Observe patients, record significant conditions and reactions, and notify physician of changes in condition or progress toward care goals.
  • Respond to life‑saving situations based on nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol.
  • Participate in precepting and mentoring while providing education/orientation to staff, students, and others.
  • Support and participate in continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Demonstrate a customer service philosophy.
  • Participate in department staff meetings and hospital-wide in‑service programs as required.
  • Maintain computer literacy.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to facilitate safe, effective, and appropriate patient care.
  • Ensure a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families, visitors, and staff.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for staff.
  • Restock and ensure adequate supplies as they are utilized for patient care.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Must be caring, sympathetic, responsible, and detail‑oriented; able to direct or supervise others, correctly assess patients’ conditions, and determine when consultation is required.
  • Have emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
  • Emergency department experience required.
  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program: Diploma RN, ADN, BSN, or MSN.
  • Maintain a valid Iowa RN license.
  • Possess BLS, ACLS, TNCC, and PALS certifications; optional certifications include ENPC, NRP, and CEN.
  • Appear caring, critical thinking, excellent communication skills, adaptive, and maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Effective oral and written communication in English.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS (SUMMARY)

Physical demands include lifting, carrying, and moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally more than 100 pounds. The role requires standing, walking, reaching, and routine hand use throughout the hospital setting.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

Operate devices such as computers, printers, copiers, calculators, IV pumps, defibrillators, and suction equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position requires frequent standing, walking, reaching, and routine hand use; occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally more than 100 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Hearing must be within the normal range for telephone contact and conversations.
