Overview

The Clinical Informaticist at UPH Grinnell focuses on addressing the electronic medical record (EMR) end-user IT needs for UnityPoint Health Des Moines’ hospital-based and ambulatory departments. This role supports EMR and other clinical and nonclinical systems related to adoption, implementation, support, optimization, change management, communication, issue resolution, business continuity, and downtime recovery. The Clinical Informaticist collaborates directly with all levels within UPH DM to support strategic initiatives and enhance patient experience, working in partnership with UPH IT resources.

Responsibilities

  1. Master specific EPIC applications and UPH-DM workflows. Educate others within the organization following standardized curricula.
  2. Identify issues and opportunities within the EMR, seek approval for enhancements, and assist in prioritizing and implementing system changes.
  3. Collaborate with UPH IT, physicians, and clinical staff to optimize EMR implementations based on clinical workflows.
  4. Communicate effectively with leadership and end users to ensure smooth implementation of new functionalities, applications, and major releases.
  5. Understand and address the impact of the EMR on other clinical applications and operations.
  6. Develop departmental operational and management backup procedures for business continuity and downtime recovery.
  7. Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining training procedures and materials for assigned applications.
  8. Coordinate training schedules and resources across UPH-DM.
  9. Provide training for clinical staff following UPH standardized curriculum.
  10. Monitor training progress and report critical issues as they arise.
  11. Utilize reporting tools to oversee and assess EHR competency levels among staff, physicians, and advanced practitioners, recommending actions to improve performance and efficiency.
  12. Conduct audits and generate reports to ensure documentation standards are met.
  13. Facilitate the development of reporting tools for patient care monitoring.
  14. Participate in quality control reviews of databases to ensure data consistency and accuracy.

Qualifications

  • Education: Completion of an accredited RN nursing program required; a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Experience: Clinical background with at least two years of experience in a hospital, physician practice, or educational training role required. Healthcare-related IT experience with project management responsibilities is preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Valid Iowa RN nursing license required. Must achieve EPIC Credentialed Trainer status within four to six months of hire for assigned EPIC modules.
