Job summary

University Medical Center, part of LCMC Health, seeks a Clinical Nurse Educator to lead educational programs for nurses and staff in the Infectious Disease Clinic, coordinating onboarding, competency validation, and continuing education.

RN Clinical Nurse Educator - Infectious Disease Clinic

Location: University Medical Center

Department: Infectious Disease Clinic

Schedule: Full-Time, Day Shift

Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for assessing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating unit-based clinical education programs for nursing and clinical staff within the Infectious Disease Clinic at University Medical Center. This role serves as an educational leader and clinical resource, supporting onboarding, orientation, competency validation, continuing education, and professional development initiatives. The Clinical Nurse Educator collaborates with nursing leadership, providers, and interdisciplinary teams to promote excellence in clinical practice, patient safety, quality outcomes, and evidence-based care.

Key Responsibilities

Education & Professional Development

• Assist with the coordination, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs for clinical staff in the Infectious Disease Clinic.
• Serve as a resource for nurses, nursing students, and healthcare personnel in the acquisition of clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and professional competencies.
• Collaborate with the Department of Nursing Education & Professional Development and clinic leadership to support staff development and patient safety initiatives.
• Coordinate and facilitate onboarding, orientation, in-service education, and continuing education programs.
• Assess learning needs and develop educational strategies to enhance staff performance and clinical competency.

Clinical Practice Leadership & Coaching

• Model excellence in nursing practice through advanced assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
• Support new graduate nurses and newly hired staff throughout their orientation process.
• Provide clinical expertise and mentorship to reinforce standards of care and promote professional growth.
• Assist nursing staff with clinical decision-making, prioritization, and critical thinking.
• Oversee the implementation of new clinical practices, workflows, and evidence-based protocols.
• Validate and document clinical competencies as appropriate.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Collaborate with staff nurses, providers, leadership teams, and interdisciplinary healthcare professionals to ensure clinical performance aligns with evidence-based standards.
• Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous learning.
• Demonstrate strong leadership through effective communication, teamwork, and professional engagement.
• Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and organizational initiatives to advance patient care and operational excellence.
• Support the development and achievement of departmental goals and strategic objectives.

Quality Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice & Research

• Maintain current knowledge of nursing practice standards, emerging trends, and evidence-based care.
• Integrate evidence-based practice into educational programs and clinical initiatives.
• Participate in quality improvement projects designed to enhance patient outcomes and staff performance.
• Support and encourage research activities and professional inquiry within the clinical setting.
• Assist in evaluating clinical outcomes and identifying opportunities for improvement.

Change Management & Innovation

• Serve as a change agent by supporting the implementation of new clinical practices, technologies, and initiatives.
• Communicate the vision and purpose of organizational and departmental changes effectively.
• Develop educational programs that prepare staff to adapt successfully to evolving healthcare practices.
• Foster an environment that encourages innovation, professional growth, and excellence in patient care.
• Demonstrate enthusiasm, professionalism, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience: Three (3) years of prior clinical nursing experience required.
• Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) or a healthcare-related field required.
• Licenses & Certifications: Current Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) licensure through the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in ambulatory, outpatient, infectious disease, public health, or specialty clinic settings.
• Previous experience in nursing education, staff development, precepting, or clinical instruction.
• Certification in Nursing Professional Development (NPD) or specialty nursing certification preferred.
• Experience with EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
