Job description

The OR Circulating Nurse provides individualized and specialized nursing care to patients in the surgery department in accordance with physician's orders, recognized nursing standards, legal aspects of current nurse practice within the state, and Trinity Regional Hospital Sachse's policies and procedures. Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff, exhibiting teamwork characteristics. Demonstrates initiative, insight, and judgment in decision-making processes.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of Perioperative Services, the OR Circulator is responsible for all nursing activities related to surgical procedures in her/his assigned area. This includes supervision of personnel, observing aseptic techniques, preparing instruments and supplies, and assisting with patient positioning and transfer. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Checking assignment details and ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are prepared.
  2. Ensuring the cleanliness and readiness of the operating room.
  3. Identifying patients and assisting with their preparation and positioning.
  4. Assisting with sterile procedures and equipment sterilization.
  5. Monitoring the progress of surgery and providing necessary instruments and supplies.
  6. Maintaining aseptic practices and reporting breaches immediately.
  7. Handling emergency procedures calmly and effectively.
  8. Labeling specimens and preparing them for laboratory analysis.
  9. Assisting with patient transfer post-operation and room cleaning/restocking.
  10. Maintaining accurate records and providing supportive care throughout the surgical process.
  11. Ensuring a safe environment and adhering to legal nursing practices.
  12. Administering medications, IV procedures, and assisting with sedation under physician direction.
  13. Participating in professional development and team collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Current Texas RN license
  • Current BLS, PALS, and ACLS certifications
  • Preferably, two years of operating room experience
  • CNOR and AORN affiliation preferred
