Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment initiative. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • English Language Proficiency: Must demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken English as per 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing school by ACEN or CCNE; or enrolled in a master's level bridge program with completion of coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Nursing; or foreign nursing graduates with current unrestricted registration and degree validation.
    Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a professional nurse in the U.S. or its territories is required.
  • Licensure and Certification: Must obtain a state license; candidates without licensure may be appointed as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) on a temporary basis while pursuing licensure, with possible extension up to two years.
  • Preferred Experience: BSN or MSN with leadership/management experience and 5 years of PACU/Critical Care experience.

Grade Determinations: The scope of practice and educational requirements vary by grade level, from Nurse I (entry-level) to Nurse III (leadership), with specific experience and educational criteria outlined for each. For detailed scope and assessment criteria, refer to this link.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically capable of performing duties; a pre-placement physical exam is required.

Duties
  • Provide clinical oversight and support in the PACU, monitor patient care and recovery, assist with complex cases, and ensure adherence to best practices.
  • Staff scheduling, resource management, and coordination with OR scheduling to optimize staffing and skill mix.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives and monitor patient outcomes and quality metrics.
  • Mentor new nurses, identify training needs, and support professional development.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff and leadership, facilitate communication, and lead staff meetings.
  • Assist in policy development, ensure compliance, and promote a culture of safety.
  • Maintain documentation, generate reports, and assist with recruitment and hiring.

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, with flexibility. Telework is not authorized.
