Summary

The Assistant Nurse Manager functions as a clinical expert and is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing or supervising direct patient care. The position assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates delivery of care based on age-specific components and assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • English Language Proficiency
  • In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing (ACEN or CCNE at the time of completion).
  • OR individuals in a master's level bridge program with coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Nursing, with opportunity to become registered prior to completion.
  • Upon licensing, appointment can be temporary and later converted to permanent.
  • Foreign nursing graduates must possess current, unrestricted registration and may require degree equivalency validation.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a professional nurse in the U.S.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: candidates without licensure may be appointed temporarily while pursuing licensure.

  • Education and experience levels: Nurse I, Nurse II, Nurse III, with specific qualifications and experience requirements as detailed in the original description.

Preferred Experience: BSN 3-5 years medical/surgical nursing, telemetry, ACLS, BLS, supervisory/leadership experience highly desired.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting, carrying, pulling, reaching, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, visual and auditory requirements, and emotional stability.

Duties
  • The ANM supports the Nurse Manager in supervising and managing the 24/7 operations of designated units.
  • Provides coverage for other ANMs and Supervisors as needed.
  • Responsible for staff orientation, training, development, and performance evaluation.
  • Acts as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader, influencing care outcomes through collaboration and evidence-based practices.
  • Leads and organizes care delivery, ensures continuity, and promotes peer accountability in alignment with ANA standards.
  • Applies advanced clinical knowledge to involve staff in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Leads initiatives to improve veteran care experience and safety beyond immediate practice settings.
  • Models high reliability principles and values to enhance care consistency and outcomes.
  • Guides professional growth and demonstrates expertise in evidence-based practice.
