Job summary

McKenzie Health is seeking a Clinic Nurse (RN) for our Rural Health Clinic and Allergy Clinic in Watford City, ND. The RN will oversee testing, immunotherapy, and biologic treatments while educating patients on care and prevention.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with an associate degree or higher.
• 1 year clinic experience preferred but new graduates welcome.

Responsibilities

• Perform allergy testing including skin prick and intradermal tests with proper pre/post instructions.
• Administer allergy immunotherapy and monitor patient responses per protocol.
• Manage biologic medications per orders and coordinate follow-up with care teams.
• Conduct medication and food challenge procedures with safety monitoring.
• Maintain emergency preparedness and respond to anaphylaxis as needed.
• Support clinic operations and ensure accurate patient documentation.

Position Overview

The Clinic Nurse in our Rural Health Clinic and Allergy Clinic will provide care to patients at our fast‑paced medical clinic. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring patient health, providing treatments, administering medications, and educating patients on health maintenance and disease prevention. Additionally, the Clinic Nurse will work closely with the medical staff to ensure quality care is provided to all patients.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Allergy Testing

• Skin prick testing.
• Intradermal testing.
• Environmental allergen testing.
• Food allergen testing.
• Medication allergy testing when appropriate.
• Preparation of patients and supplies for testing.
• Monitoring patients during and following testing.
• Measuring, documenting, and reporting testing results.
• Providing pre‑testing instructions, including medication restrictions as directed by the provider.
• Providing post‑testing education and instructions.

Allergy Immunotherapy

• Administer subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy according to provider orders and established protocols.
• Verify correct patient, allergen extract, vial, concentration, dose, and schedule prior to administration.
• Review patients for illness, medication changes, previous reactions, and other factors that may affect immunotherapy administration.
• Monitor patients for the required observation period following injections.
• Assess and document local or systemic reactions.
• Follow established protocols for dose adjustments after missed injections or reactions.
• Communicate significant reactions or concerns to the provider.
• Educate patients regarding immunotherapy schedules, expected reactions, and symptoms requiring immediate medical attention.
• Maintain accurate immunotherapy documentation and tracking.

Biologic Medication Management

• Administer injectable biologic medications according to provider orders and organizational policy.
• Coordinate initiation and ongoing administration of biologic therapies.
• Provide education regarding medication administration, expected effects, potential adverse reactions, and treatment schedules.
• Monitor patients following medication administration when required.
• Assist with teaching patients or caregivers appropriate self‑administration techniques when applicable.
• Track medication schedules and ensure patients receive appropriate follow‑up.
• Coordinate with pharmacies, specialty pharmacies, insurance companies, and prior authorization staff as needed.

Medication and Food Challenges

• Oral food challenges.
• Medication challenges.
• Graded medication administration.
• Preparation of appropriate medications, foods, supplies, and emergency equipment.
• Baseline patient assessment prior to challenge initiation.
• Administration of ordered doses at designated intervals.
• Frequent assessment and monitoring throughout the challenge.
• Recognition and documentation of symptoms or reactions.
• Immediate communication with the provider regarding changes in patient condition.
• Patient education and discharge instructions following completion of the challenge.

Emergency Preparedness and Anaphylaxis Management

• Maintain the ability to recognize signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and other serious allergic reactions.
• Initiate emergency response procedures according to organizational policy and provider direction.
• Administer emergency medications within the RN scope of practice and according to established orders or protocols.
• Maintain current BLS certification.
• Ensure emergency medications and equipment are readily available and appropriately maintained.
• Participate in emergency preparedness education and competency validation.
• Educate patients and caregivers regarding recognition and management of severe allergic reactions.
• Provide education regarding proper use of epinephrine auto‑injectors.

General Responsibilities

• Assist with the management of patient flow and clinic operations.
• Maintain accurate and confidential patient records.
• Support billing and insurance processes as required.
• Implement emergency protocols and provide life‑saving interventions as needed.
• Participates in analyzing and planning coordinated nursing services in an assigned area.
• Gives skilled nursing care to patients requiring professional nursing service; gives prescribed medications and other treatments.
• Interprets care plans and demonstrates appropriate procedures to licensed vocational nurses, nursing aides, and other staff.
• Participates in coordinating total clinic services in the interest of the patient.
• Provides for continuity of effective patient and family care by exchanging information and cooperating with workers of other community health and welfare agencies concerned such as hospitals, schools, and industries.
• Assists families in achieving healthful, safe living for all age groups by giving instructions and guidance in the basic principles relating to accident prevention, communicable disease control, nutrition, child growth and development, and physical and emotional fitness.
• Aids individuals and families to accept and adjust positively to physical, mental, and social limitations.
• Performs other duties as assigned specific to work area or specialty.

Qualifications Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Prolonged periods of standing, bending and reaching.
• Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds at times.

Required Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of professional nursing principles, techniques, basic sciences, and of community health and welfare resources.
• Ability to apply professional nursing principles, techniques, and basic sciences in homes, clinics, and the community.
• Ability to carry out written and oral instructions and to exercise judgment in the application of nursing care.
• Ability to work cooperatively with people and to maintain an objective attitude.
• Ability to exercise tact and initiative.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Experience

• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with a minimum of associate’s degree in nursing
• Minimum of 1 year in clinic setting preferred but we Welcome New Graduates

Licenses and Certifications

• Active unencumbered Registered Nurse license with the ND Board of Nursing
• Basic Life Support required
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support preferred
