Description
Responsibilities
  • Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
  • Provides specialized perioperative care based on Standards of Care/Practice to patients of all ages undergoing procedures ranging from complex surgery to routine procedures and emergency surgery. Maintains direct responsibility for nursing care of assigned patients within the registered nurse scope of practice.
  • Assesses the perioperative patient's physiological and psychosocial status to develop a nursing care plan with goals based on nursing diagnosis and patient outcomes.
  • Receives and accurately processes physician orders via telephone, verbal, and written communication, utilizing read-back process.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medications, their correct administration, and documentation, following medication administration rights and processes.
  • Sets up, operates, and monitors specialized patient care equipment such as cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, electrocautery, robotics, laparoscopic, arthroscopic, and scopes like colonoscopes/EGD for pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative care.
  • Assesses patient and family needs, provides education, and makes referrals to ensure continuity of care.
  • Develops individualized care plans collaboratively with patients, families, and healthcare team.
  • Completes documentation promptly in the electronic health record to maintain an accurate legal record.
  • Delivers high-quality care utilizing the nursing process, demonstrating clinical skills in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Uses a holistic approach considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and other relevant factors appropriate to patient age and needs.
  • Delegates and directs healthcare team members within their scope of practice, holding them accountable.
  • Applies critical thinking to develop nursing interventions, maintaining responsibility and accountability for patient conditions.
Patient Education and Safety
  • Assesses and selects appropriate teaching strategies based on patient and family age, culture, gender, readiness, and comprehension.
  • Consults hospital resources for specialized perioperative education.
  • Prioritizes patient and workplace safety by preventing errors, accidents, and infections; reports concerns immediately.
  • Participates actively in department performance improvement activities.
Requirements
Qualifications
  • Education:
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • BSN degree preferred
  • Experience:
  • Minimum 6 months hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency
  • Previous operating room experience
  • Licenses/Certifications:
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Iowa in good standing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (must be current or obtained within 3 months of hire)
  • ACLS certification (must be obtained within the first year of employment)
  • CNOR certification preferred
  • Valid driver's license for work-related driving
