Job summary

A leading mining company is looking for a Specialist, Risk to develop and implement a comprehensive Risk Management System at their Hermosa site in Patagonia, Arizona. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and expertise in risk management practices. Responsibilities include coordinating risk assessments, monitoring risk environments, and fostering a proactive safety culture across operations. This role supports informed decision-making and collaboration with key stakeholders to improve operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, Finance, Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • Expertise in risk management practices and governance processes.
  • Experience in facilitating risk workshops and leading hazard studies.
  • Knowledge of Risk Management Standards (ISO 31000, ISO 31031).
  • Experience in the resources industry with operational exposure; industrial safety engineering desirable.
  • Strong analytical and data monitoring and analytics capabilities.
  • Ability to design and implement risk and assurance processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the Hermosa Risk Management System.
  • Coordinate and facilitate risk assessments and hazard studies.
  • Monitor internal and external risk environments for emerging risks.
  • Monitor internal and external risk environments to identify emerging risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Coordinate and facilitate risk assessments, hazard studies (e.g., HAZAN, HAZOP), and safety reviews with key stakeholders.
  • Support the planning and delivery of risk workshops, decision analysis sessions, and value engineering reviews.
  • Contribute to the preparation of timely and accurate risk reports, highlighting key exposures and trends for stakeholders.

Hermosa, located approximately 75 miles south-east of Tucson, Arizona, is the only advanced mining project in the United States as of 2023 that could produce two federally designated critical minerals—manganese and zinc—as well as silver and lead. The project has the potential to help power the nation’s clean energy future, strengthen the domestic supply chain of critical minerals, grow the local economy, and improve lives in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding community for generations to come.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As Specialist, Risk you will be a key contributor to the development and implementation of the Hermosa Risk Management System, applying advanced risk management practices to ensure processes and systems are robust, well‑governed, and continuously improved. This role safeguards the integrity of the system and drives enhancements across the project. Working closely with project teams and key stakeholders, the Risk Specialist coordinates risk assessments, facilitates hazard studies, maintains risk registers, and provides timely, accurate reporting to enable informed decision‑making.

In addition, this position champions a proactive safety culture and supports continuous improvement initiatives, fostering care, accountability, and inclusion throughout the organization. This role will be based at the Hermosa site in Patagonia, two days a week.

Other key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Risk Management Support
  • Assist in maintaining the Hermosa risk profile, ensuring alignment with South32 standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the implementation and governance of risk management processes, including compliance with statutory obligations and internal frameworks.
  • Help maintain and update risk registers and baseline risk profile, ensuring accurate documentation of risks, mitigation actions, and progress tracking.
  • Monitor internal and external risk environments to identify emerging risks and improvement opportunities.
  • Coordinate and facilitate risk assessments, hazard studies (e.g., HAZAN, HAZOP), and safety reviews in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Support the planning and delivery of risk workshops, decision analysis sessions, and value engineering reviews.
  • Contribute to the preparation of timely and accurate risk reports, highlighting key exposures and trends for stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement & Training
  • Provide specialist risk and compliance support to operational teams through tools, coaching, and training.
  • Assist in engaging with operational teams and leadership on risk matters to enable informed decision‑making.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders to support risk management objectives.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture by modeling safety‑first behaviors and supporting compliance across operations.
  • Contribute to operational improvements through collaboration and data‑driven insights.
  • Support Management of Change (MoC) processes and assist teams during transitions.
  • Foster a culture of care, accountability, inclusion, and knowledge sharing by participating in risk networks and forums.

ABOUT YOU
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in risk management and assurance practices, including governance processes and legal/insurance considerations.
  • Proven experience facilitating risk workshops and leading hazard studies (e.g., HAZAN, HAZOP); familiarity with bow‑tie analysis, critical control frameworks, and performance standards.
  • Strong understanding of Risk Management Standards (e.g., ISO 31000, ISO 31031) and ability to adapt processes to diverse stakeholder needs.
  • Experience in the resources industry, ideally with operational‑level exposure; industrial or process safety engineering experience is desirable.
  • Solid knowledge of relevant legislation, governance frameworks, and assurance requirements.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including advanced data monitoring and analytics capabilities.
  • Excellent ability to design and implement risk and assurance processes.
