Treasury and Risk Senior Specialist – Quantitative Analysis

Location: Washington, D.C.

About this position

We are looking for a proactive, creative and committed Treasury and Risk Senior Specialist – Quantitative Analysis to lead quantitative measurement of risks in the Bank’s derivatives portfolio. The role will work in Treasury Risk Management, part of the Office of Risk Management, covering the Bank’s derivatives and investment portfolios.

What you’ll do
  • Lead the development of innovative and effective risk management methodologies, models, and analytical solutions to support the Bank's risk management activities in a highly complex and dynamic market environment.
  • Lead the development of quantitative analyses and models incorporating financial and non‑financial risks, including multidimensional stress testing, scenario analysis, and robust decision models.
  • Conduct the quantitative analysis of risks across the IDB’s derivatives, investment, and funding portfolios.
  • Own derivatives analytics, overseeing systems that calculate counterparty risk metrics.
  • Develop and implement state‑of‑the‑art analytical tools and systems for measuring credit risk in derivative portfolios.
  • Maintain and improve internally developed pricing models and risk systems; advise on potential new systems and lead their implementation.
  • Evaluate complex or illiquid structures and evolve analytics to handle them.
  • Determine availability of market data inputs (yield curves, volatilities, etc.) to run risk models.
  • Introduce advances in portfolio analytics, including strategic asset allocation, to align strategies and risks with the Bank’s objectives and tolerance.
  • Drive automation of risk measurement in coordination with technology and treasury teams.
  • Collaborate with risk management teams to ensure smooth data handoff to limit and reporting systems.
  • Continuously evolve risk measures as regulations and market practices develop.
  • Develop tools to manage swap exposures and achieve bank objectives optimally.
  • Partner with Treasury and risk managers to enhance transparency in derivative pricing costs and exposure optimization.
  • Maintain thorough documentation for models and systems and contribute to regular reporting.
  • Work on priority projects assigned by Group Heads.
What you'll need

Education: Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Engineering, or another quantitatively oriented discipline (Ph.D. preferred).

Experience and functional knowledge:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in quantitative statistical or mathematical modeling.
  • Outstanding analytical and quantitative skills, with a clear ability to add value through creative and disciplined analysis.
  • Broad and deep knowledge of global financial markets, products, and regulations, including the ability to assess non‑financial risks such as ESG, and financial risks of multi‑currency and illiquid derivative portfolios.
  • Experience designing, developing, and implementing state‑of‑the‑art modeling tools for portfolio risk management and securities valuation.
  • Proficiency in advanced quantitative finance techniques (stochastic calculus, portfolio optimization, econometrics, term‑structure modeling, Monte‑Carlo simulation).
  • Ability to draft well‑written, coherent analyses and proposals for senior management and engage senior decision‑makers on complex risk issues.
  • Proven ability to find practical solutions to complex problems.
  • Advanced programming skills in Matlab, C++, Python, and Visual Basic; familiarity with RDM, climate scenario models, Bayesian models, and specialized risk models or financial systems such as QRM and Summit is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical issues in simple terms.

Languages: Fluency in English required; knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese, or French preferred.

Requirements
  • Citizenship: citizen of one of the IDB’s 48 member countries.
  • Consanguinity: no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
  • Type of contract and duration: International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
