Job Summary

Risk Management professional responsible for organization, analysis and management of all risk management activities of a facility or group of facilities. Responsible for identifying, preventing, and managing clinical and non‑clinical risks, day‑to‑day administration of risk management program, collaboration with staff and leadership, ensuring compliance, improving patient safety, protecting assets, and serving as subject matter expert, internal consultant, educator. Domain includes loss prevention, claims management, risk transfer, regulatory compliance, biethics. Requires on‑call availability. Reports to facility administrative leader with dotted line to System Chief Risk Officer and System Director of Clinical Risk Management.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: Baccalaureate in a healthcare‑related field required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
• Licenses / Certifications: Certified in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or ability to obtain within two (2) years.
• Experience: Minimum of five (5) years progressive experience in a hospital‑based clinical role; post‑acute care experience strongly preferred for those primarily responsible for post‑acute risk management programs.
• Minimum of four (4) years experience in a clinical risk management or comparable healthcare managerial or medico‑legal role.
• Knowledge of risk management principles, core functions, and familiarity with healthcare regulatory and accreditation requirements.
• Demonstrated flexibility, discretion, emotional maturity, and ability to work collaboratively and independently.
• Strong written and oral communication, presentation, and leadership skills.
• Ability to organize, influence, and effect change without direct authority.
• Conflict management and negotiation skills a plus.

Principal Accountabilities

Responsible for day‑to‑day operations of the risk management program, employing an enterprise risk approach to exposures and loss control activities.

• Identify strategies to enhance operations, reduce exposures, and coordinate facility risk assessments.
• Provide consultation to leadership, staff, and physicians on daily risk management issues; assist System Legal and Risk Management Services as needed.
• On‑call duties required.
• Review and triage all occurrence reports in Variance Reporting System (VRS), divert incidents to appropriate functions for investigation; exclude general customer service complaints.
• Analyze occurrence, claims, and other data sources for risk trends; report to leadership and develop targeted initiatives.
• Collaborate with Patient Safety on event analysis and serve as risk management representative on quality/patient safety committees.
• Proactively identify training needs, develop and present education to reduce frequency and severity of risks.
• Participate in disclosure of unexpected or adverse clinical outcomes; provide training on the disclosure process.
• Serve as expert advisor on clinical and non‑clinical committees as required.
• Monitor compliance with codes, laws, and regulations, including SMDA standards and other regulatory duties.
• Address high‑risk patient complaints that may lead to legal action; resolve grievances with patient representatives.
• Assist system risk management in coordinating information gathering and interviews related to claims; interact with legal counsel.
• Act as liaison between system insurance services and the facility for claims of physical loss.
• Support investigation of safety or security incidents with Occupational Health and Safety or Security; participate in facility safety committees.
• Recommend new or amended policies and procedures; support the policy and procedure committee.
• Participate in emergency preparedness initiatives.
• Support system risk management goals and facility‑based goals aligned with organizational strategy.
• Ensure safe care for patients, staff, and visitors; adhere to all Memorial Hermann policies and standards within budget and time constraints.
• Promote professional growth; mentor and pre‑serve less experienced staff; support mandatory continuing education.
• Model Memorial Hermann service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized, and efficient care.
