Position Overview
We are seeking a Risk Manager to join a Patient Safety & Risk Management team within the Quality and Patient Safety (QPS) Department.
The Risk Manager will be responsible for the identification, evaluation, and mitigation of risk across the organization. This individual will provide leadership in healthcare risk management by promoting high-quality patient care, supporting regulatory compliance, strengthening patient safety, and mitigating malpractice risk through proactive loss-prevention strategies.
The Risk Manager will work closely with clinical teams, hospital leadership, Quality and Patient Safety, legal counsel, and regulatory stakeholders. This position will play an integral role in incident investigation, corrective action planning, regulatory and accreditation readiness, risk-management education, and continuous patient-safety improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential risks to patients, staff, and the organization.
- Analyze incident reports, claims, patient-safety events, and other data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Review patient-safety event reports and elevate serious safety events and near misses to leadership in accordance with established policies and protocols.
- Lead investigations into adverse events, near misses, and other incidents.
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to develop corrective action plans and prevent recurrence.
- Develop and update risk-management policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Support the implementation of risk-management strategies throughout the organization.
- Prepare and submit potentially compensable events (PCEs) to the medical malpractice insurer.
- Support compliance with applicable healthcare regulations and standards, including requirements established by The Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS, CDC, DPH, BORIM, CLIA, and other applicable regulatory bodies.
- Collaborate with the Quality & Regulatory Compliance team to maintain continuous survey readiness and participate in regulatory surveys as needed.
- Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies and applicable medical malpractice insurers.
- Design and deliver education and training related to risk-management practices and patient safety.
- Stay current on regulatory changes, industry trends, and best practices related to healthcare risk management.
- Communicate risk-management activities, findings, and outcomes to senior leadership and organizational stakeholders.
- Collaborate with legal counsel on matters involving patient safety, risk, and potential liability when requested.
- Partner closely with clinical, legal, administrative, Patient Safety, and QPS teams on risk and safety concerns.
- Participate in or facilitate improvement initiatives related to patient safety and risk mitigation.
- Monitor the effectiveness of patient-safety and risk-management programs and initiatives.
- Promote a proactive culture of safety, reporting, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Public Health, or a related field required.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in patient safety, quality, compliance, or a related healthcare field.
- Prior clinical experience is required, such as RN, NP, PA, PharmD, or a similar clinical role.
- Previous healthcare risk-management experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of healthcare regulatory and accreditation requirements, including The Joint Commission, OSHA, CDC, DPH, BORIM, CMS, and CLIA.
- Knowledge of hospital administrative and medication policies.
- Strong clinical judgment and critical-thinking skills with the ability to review confidential patient information and medical records.
- Experience investigating incidents, identifying risk, and supporting corrective and preventative actions.
- Ability to build trust and collaborate effectively with clinical staff, hospital administration, leadership, legal teams, and other stakeholders.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to influence with and without direct authority.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work effectively through ambiguity, resolve conflict, and adapt to change.
- Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, presentation, and public-speaking skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, with the ability to learn additional patient-safety and risk-management reporting systems.
