Job summary

Mortenson invites an intern to join the Risk Management team for the summer of 2027. You will work alongside project teams to evaluate risk, insurance needs, and pre-qualification procedures while gaining hands-on exposure to claims, policies, and department operations.

Expect to support analysts, review certificates, and contribute to data analysis using Power BI or Excel. This role builds a foundation for a career in construction risk management within a collaborative culture.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing an undergraduate degree inRisk Management, Insurance, Actuarial Science or related field.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills preferred.
  • Interest in construction or risk management within a corporate setting.

Responsibilities

  • Support Risk Analysts in evaluating project risk and insurance requirements.
  • Assist in reviewing and tracking insurance certificates and CCIP exposure.
  • Help with data visualization and reporting in Power BI or Excel and forecast trends.
  • Learn how risk management tools protect projects from losses and support operations.

As an intern, you’ll get hands‑on experience right away, working alongside project teams and partners to keep things moving. You’ll help solve real problems, stay organized, communicate across teams, and make an impact from day one while building the foundation for your career.

Mortenson’s Risk Management Department is currently seeking an intern to join their team for the summer of 2027. The Risk Management intern will gain exposure to the coordination of insurance contracts, risk program operations, claims, pre‑qualification procedures, policies, and general department operations.

Highlights of your time with this Mortenson internship will include:

  • Support Risk Analysts in evaluating project risk and insurance requirements, placing builders’ risk insurance, surety bonds, subcontractor default insurance and other project‑specific insurance requirements
  • Exposure to Mortenson’s contractor‑controlled insurance program (CCIP)
  • Assist in the review and tracking of trade partner insurance certificates
  • Gain experience in communicating requirements to project teams, external customers, trade partners, and insurance agents
  • Supporting Mortenson’s property & casualty insurance program
  • Visualizing data in Power BI or Excel
  • Performing data analysis to identify and forecast claim trends
  • Learn how various risk management tools holistically protect construction projects from catastrophic loss (examples include: captive insurance, contract language, trade partner prequalification, probable maximum loss analysis, and Enterprise Risk Management)
  • Reporting of claims, claim data entry & claim review participation
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate, four‑year degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Actuarial Science or other related degree
Preferred Qualifications
  • Have previous related internship experience
  • Are currently enrolled as an undergraduate junior
  • Have a basic understanding of construction and generally accepted business practices
  • Demonstrate strong collaboration, communication, and problem‑solving skills and show initiative and leadership
  • Showcase a positive and professional attitude and solid customer service skills
  • Are detail‑oriented, organized, and can effectively handle multiple competing priorities

The hourly wage for college Interns starts at $18. Students may be paid higher wages based on their year in school.
