Job summary

Meijer in Grand Rapids, MI offers an 11-week Asset Protection Risk Intelligence Internship designed to build a strong data analytics foundation. Interns profile data across platforms, identify early risk indicators, and develop prototypes that surface signals of theft or fraud before loss occurs.

You will learn alongside Meijer senior leaders, work on driver projects, and gain exposure to governance, law enforcement partnerships, and data privacy considerations within asset protection.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in data science, analytics, statistics, information systems, industrial engineering, or a related field.
• Coursework or project experience with Python, R, or SQL, and with a visualization tool such as Power BI or Tableau.
• Familiarity with anomaly detection, pattern recognition, or machine learning concepts - exposure is expected, expertise is not.

Responsibilities

• Build the analytical foundation for how Meijer identifies retail crime and fraud risk before loss occurs.
• Profile and join data across platforms, define with investigators what a credible early risk indicator looks like.
• Develop a working prototype that surfaces stores, markets, or offenders showing converging signals.
• Validate findings against closed cases and create a measurement framework to show prevented loss value.
• Exposure to other asset protection activities and governance discussions.

What you will be doing as an Asset Protection Risk Intelligence Intern

Building the analytical foundation for how Meijer identifies retail crime and fraud risk before loss occurs. Asset Protection receives signals from a wide range of technologies - and today those signals are largely reviewed independently rather than through a single risk lens. This role brings them together. Work includes profiling and joining data across platforms, defining with investigators what a credible early risk indicator actually looks like, building a working prototype that surfaces stores, markets, or offenders showing converging signals, and validating those findings against closed cases. The intern will also develop the measurement framework that shows what prevented loss is worth.

The intern may also get exposure to other activities of the function, including:

• Organized retail crime, fraud, and internal investigations
• Asset protection technology evaluation and pilot governance
• Data privacy and governance considerations for surveillance technologies
• Law enforcement and prosecutor partnership work
• Remote Operations Center and alert response operations
• Broader understanding of Meijer's Asset Protection organization

Qualifications:

• Progress toward a Bachelor's or Master's degree in data science, analytics, statistics, information systems, industrial engineering, or a related field
• Coursework or project experience with Python, R, or SQL, and with a visualization tool such as Power BI or Tableau
• Familiarity with anomaly detection, pattern recognition, or machine learning concepts - exposure is expected, expertise is not
• Ability to translate analytical findings for a non-technical leadership audience
• Ability to work flexible shifts (primarily days) to gain exposure to the full operation of the business
