The Risk Analyst, under general supervision, is responsible for supporting all aspects of the County’s claims management and risk management functions. This position performs duties ranging from claims data entry and records maintenance to analyzing loss data, identifying trends, and presenting findings and recommendations to the Department leadership and County leadership. This position also assists in developing and implementing strategies to reduce losses, mitigate risk, control costs, and improve claims management processes throughout the County while working collaboratively with County departments, employees, third-party administrators, insurance carriers, and other external partners to support effective risk management practices.

  • Serves as a primary County contact for third-party administrators (TPAs), insurance carriers, adjusters, and other external claims partners regarding workers’ compensation, liability, property, automobile, and other assigned claims.
  • Administers and maintains the County’s Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) program for employees authorized to operate County-owned, leased, or other vehicles for County business.
  • Reviews MVRs in accordance with County policy and identifies driving violations, license restrictions, suspensions, accidents, or other information that may increase the County’s motor vehicle liability exposure.
  • Assists the Risk Manager with reviewing, evaluating, and maintaining County insurance policies, risk management policies, procedures, and related documents.
  • Assists with monitoring insurance policy terms, coverage limits, deductibles, exclusions, renewal dates, and other key provisions.
  • Manages and maintains accurate claims records, including data entry, documentation, status updates, correspondence, and case tracking.
  • Monitors open and closed claims to ensure timely follow-up, accurate information, appropriate documentation, and timely resolution.
  • Coordinates with TPAs, insurance carriers, adjusters, County departments, employees, legal representatives, medical providers, and other stakeholders to obtain information necessary for effective claims management.
  • Reviews claims activity, loss reports, reserves, payments, and other claims-related data to identify trends, recurring issues, areas of increased exposure, and opportunities for loss prevention.
  • Prepares reports, summaries, presentations, dashboards, and other analytical information regarding claims, losses, risk exposures, and trends for the Risk Manager and County leadership.
  • Recommends corrective and preventive measures designed to reduce losses, control costs, improve safety, and mitigate risk.
  • Assists the Risk Manager with OSHA reporting, recordkeeping, documentation, and compliance requirements.
  • Supports the development, implementation, and integration of risk management software used to track open and closed claims, monitor claim status and activity, maintain accurate records, generate reports, and provide information necessary to effectively manage claims, identify risk exposures, and achieve cost savings for the County.
  • Assists County departments with the implementation, adoption, and effective use of the risk management system.
  • Develops and maintains tracking tools, reports, and dashboards to monitor claims activity, loss trends, risk exposures, and other key risk management metrics.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve claims processes, reporting procedures, data quality, documentation, and overall risk management practices.
  • Assists the Risk Manager in developing, implementing, and administering the County’s Return-to-Work Program for employees recovering from work-related injuries or illnesses.
  • Coordinates with employees, supervisors, medical providers, TPAs, and other appropriate parties to facilitate timely and appropriate return-to-work opportunities.
  • Tracks employees participating in the Return-to-Work Program and maintains appropriate documentation regarding work status, restrictions, assignments, and anticipated return dates.
  • Assists with driver safety and loss-prevention initiatives based on MVR findings, automobile claims, accident trends, and other risk data.
  • Maintains confidentiality and appropriately safeguards sensitive claims, employee, medical, legal, financial, and County information.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned by the Department leadership.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited university and three (3) years of related experience in analyzing risk, loss prevention, program development, program implementation or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to maintain a safe driving history as defined by the Union County Vehicle Use Policy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Business Administration, Risk Management, or Finance, and five (5) years of related experience in analyzing risk, loss prevention, program development, program implementation or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
  • Manager of Environmental Safety and Health (MESH), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), or Associate in Claims (AIC) by the Insurance Institute of America.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to maintain a safe driving history as defined by the Union County Vehicle Use Policy.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, printers, copiers, facsimile machines, calculators, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in an environment where the employee must deal with crisis situations that require major decisions involving people, resources, and property.
