Job summary

Linn County in Cedar Rapids, IA is seeking a Criminal Prosecutor I to handle prosecution of simple misdemeanors and traffic violations on behalf of the Linn County Attorney’s Office. This role requires strong research, case prep, and courtroom advocacy to deliver fair justice for the community.

Shift: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; competitive wages with annual increases and robust benefits including IPERS and on-site wellness options.

Qualifications

• Requires Master’s or Ph.D. level of study.
• No prior experience required.

Responsibilities

• Prosecutes simple misdemeanors and traffic violations under Iowa law.
• Prepares cases by reviewing reports, conducting legal research, and meeting with victims and witnesses.
• Drafts and negotiates plea agreements; participates in pretrial hearings and case management conferences.
• Prepares witnesses for testimony and organizes evidence for trial.
• Drafts and argues pretrial motions; participates in jury selection and closing arguments.
• Represents the County Attorney’s Office in mental health commitment hearings and related appeals.
