JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY:

Perform rigging operations working within repair teams, under the Supervision of a multi-disciplined Trade Supervisor. Involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping or bending and possible working assignments in overhead structures, confined spaces or beneath machinery. Strict adherence to safety, quality standards, good housekeeping habits, high level of critical thinking/reading comprehension, and frequent travel/overtime are required. This position requires the ability to work long hours, including nights and weekends, on short notice.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, layout, assemble, repair and install complex weight handling gear and various standing and running rigging.
  • Inspect fabricate, replace and turn standing rigging such as slings, tackle and ladders using hand and power tools.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of rigging procedures and equipment
  • Select gear; cables, pulleys and winches according to the load weight, size and work schedule.
  • Align, level and anchor machinery.
  • Splice and tie ropes to form netting, ladders and other rigging.
  • Install hooks, swivels and turnbuckles in rigging, reeves lines through blocks.
  • Move ships engines, generators, turbines, pumps, boilers, structural shapes and plates, as well as ordnance equipment such as bombs, torpedoes, aluminum and electronic equipment such as sonar rear.
  • Install and inspect beam clamps, pad eyes, gallows frames and other supporting structures for rigging gear.
  • Test gears for strength and safety
  • Assist the drivers in the salvage work, move salvage equipment and raise objects to be salvaged
  • Inspect all areas of the job for hazards and unsafe conditions; coordinate with the fire watch supervisor and fire watches to ensure it is safe in the areas where hot work is to be performed.
  • Ensure that all safety rules are followed and all unsafe conditions are reported to the Safety Department.
  • Ensure work areas are secure upon completion of assigned shift.
  • Recognize and communicate any problems.
  • Communicate regularly about repair and maintenance needs on all major pieces of equipment on assigned jobs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from a standard apprenticeship/trade/vocational school.
  • High school diploma or GED required and 2 to 3 years of related experience or equivalent of training and experience.
  • Ability to gain access to military installations.
  • Eligibility to work in the US.
  • Must pass a drug test and background check.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk thru you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, vertical ladders and bending or stooping thru tight spaces. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds.

Environmental Conditions:

This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places.

During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to:

Ear plugs or attenuator

Safety shoes

Dust mask or respirator

Gloves
