THE POSITION

Join the Bureau of Audits, Pittsburgh Regional Office as a Revenue Tax Auditor and help support fair and accurate tax practices across Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on learning how to conduct field audits that check taxpayer compliance with state tax laws and regulations. It involves reviewing records, preparing audit plans, and working directly with taxpayers and their representatives. As a Revenue Tax Auditor, you will perform the following duties:

  • Audit Preparation: Review taxpayer history and plan audit steps
  • Record Analysis: Examine books and financial documents to determine tax accuracy
  • Field Work: Inspect facilities and meet with representatives to verify operations
  • Audit Documentation: Draft clear narratives, schedules, and reports that explain findings
  • Taxpayer Education: Provide guidance to improve future tax reporting practices
  • Training Support: Share knowledge with other auditors during on-the-job instruction

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, ad hoc, upon successful completion of the in-office training period of 30 days, based on operational and field work scheduling needs. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Revenue Tax Auditor Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of professional accounting or auditing experience and a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 15 college credits in accounting, tax, or auditing; or
  • Eligibility to sit for the Certified Public Accountant examination.

Other Requirements:

  • You must reside in or be willing to relocate to Lawrence, Butler, Armstrong, Allegheny, Westmoreland, Beaver, Washington, Greene, or Fayette County before the date of hire.

  • This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
