Job summary

NaturPak's Innovation Facility in Janesville, WI seeks a Retort Operator - Quality Utility for 2nd shift to support QA/QC across multiple lines. You will perform in-process checks, sample product, and assist QC Technicians to maintain GMP and HACCP standards.

This role requires attention to detail, ability to follow SOPs, and willingness to work evenings and overtime in a high-volume pet food facility under USDA/FDA oversight.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 1 year of experience in food manufacturing, quality control, or GMP-regulated environment.
• Ability to read and follow SOPs, quality plans, and work instructions.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and overtime.

Responsibilities

• Float across production lines and QC stations to provide quality coverage.
• Pull product samples and perform basic in-process checks (weight, pH, temp, texture, visuals).
• Assist QC Technicians with in-line monitoring during high-volume runs.
• Conduct label verification to ensure finished packaging meets specs.
• Record CCP measurements and pre-requisite program parameters as directed.
• Identify non-conforming product, initiate holds, and notify QA Supervisor.
• Perform sanitation inspections and support verification activities (calibrations, swabs).
• Maintain quality records, logs, and traceability in real time.
• Keep work areas clean and compliant with GMP, HACCP, OSHA policies.

The Quality Utility supports the QA/QC department at NaturPak's Innovation Facility by providing flexible coverage across quality functions wherever it is needed. This role is essential to keeping NaturPak's food safety and quality programs running smoothly — assisting QC Technicians, performing in-process checks, and ensuring every production line stays in compliance with GMP, HACCP, and food safety standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Float across production lines and QC stations to provide quality coverage wherever needed throughout the shift
• Pull product samples and perform basic in-process quality checks: weight, pH, temperature, texture, and visual inspection
• Assist QC Technicians with in-line monitoring tasks during high-volume runs or when additional coverage is required
• Conduct label verification checks to ensure finished packaging meets approved specifications
• Monitor and record Critical Control Point (CCP) measurements and pre-requisite program parameters as directed
• Identify non-conforming product, initiate hold procedures, and notify QA Supervisor immediately
• Perform pre-operational and post-operational sanitation inspections as assigned
• Support verification activities such as thermometer calibrations, scale checks, and environmental swabs
• Complete all quality records, inspection logs, and traceability documentation accurately and in real time
• Maintain a clean and organized work area in all quality stations and the QC lab at all times
• Follow all GMP, food safety, HACCP, OSHA, and NaturPak safety policies throughout every shift

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed at NaturPak's Innovation Facility at 4260 Capitol Circle, Janesville, WI. This is a high-volume pet food manufacturing facility operating under USDA/FDA oversight. The Quality Utility works across multiple production lines and quality stations throughout the shift. The environment includes varying temperatures, wet surfaces, industrial equipment noise, and food processing odors. Full compliance with NaturPak's GMP, food safety, HACCP, and OSHA programs is mandatory at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Minimum 1 year of experience in food manufacturing, quality control, or a GMP-regulated environment
• Basic understanding of GMP, food safety, and quality inspection practices
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records
• Ability to read and follow written SOPs, quality plans, and work instructions
• Reliable attendance; ability to work assigned shifts including evenings, weekends, and overtime

Preferred

• Prior experience in a QC Technician, quality utility, or lab support role in food or pet food manufacturing
• Familiarity with HACCP principles and Critical Control Points
• Experience performing basic quality tests (pH, temperature, weight, sensory)
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift on a production floor
• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 40 lbs regularly
• Ability to work in varying temperature zones including warm processing and cold storage areas
• Must be able to move quickly between production areas as quality coverage needs arise
• Must be able to wear required PPE: hair/beard net, safety shoes, gloves, apron, and hearing protection
