The mission of the BART Police Department is to ensure a safe environment within our transit system, reduce crime through visible policing, enforce laws proactively, and build public trust through community partnership.
Purpose: Retiree Annuitant Program
BART seeks to appoint former sworn police officers in good standing as retired annuitants to provide security and other police duties on non-District property as needed. This role is for individuals eligible for post-retirement employment. Appointees are assigned to perform duties of a temporary nature, not exceeding 960 hours per fiscal year. Appointments are at the top step (Step 5), and are 'at-will' with no benefits. Retired officers from safety/sworn classifications do not need a break in service to be appointed.
Note: Appointees must possess a current Basic P.O.S.T. certification and maintain it during employment. An employment agreement with BART is required.
Selection Process
Selection is at the discretion of the Chief of Police or designee. Priority is given to previous BART Police Department employees. The process includes:
Retirees appointed within 180 days of retirement are exempt from the background check.
The successful candidate must demonstrate reliability, provide necessary documents, pass a pre-employment medical exam, background check, and polygraph.
Applicants may be asked to provide documents such as citizenship papers, birth certificates, transcripts, DMV records, insurance proof, marriage/divorce certificates, and POST certificates.
These provisions comply with CalPERS regulations.
