Job description

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is hiring a Gardenshop Floor Manager!

Are you an experienced guest services or retail manager, excited about inspiring meaningful connections among people, plants, and nature in one of the most beautiful settings in Maine, and committed to supporting the Gardens’ Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility goals?

The mission of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is to inspire meaningful connections between people and nature and to promote plant conservation through horticulture, education, and plant science. We do this work together in a community dedicated to being inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible and where every member is valued, respected, and appreciated.

Gardenshop supports this mission by extending our reach beyond the Gardens and into the larger world, providing our guests with a thoughtfully curated collection of ethically sourced and sustainably produced goods that, whenever possible, uplift our vibrant community of local makers, especially those most impacted by inequity.

The Gardenshop Floor Manager serves as an ambassador for the organization while overseeing all daily functions of our onsite retail shop, assisted by team leaders to ensure seven-day management coverage, elevating the guest experience while generating meaningful financial support for the Gardens and our community. The Gardenshop, Gardenshop Floor Manager, and Gardenshop Floor Team are often the last on-site impression guests have of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. They provide a valuable opportunity to enrich the visitor experience through friendly, helpful, and efficient service.

  • Experience working in a Gardens or nonprofit environment is preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills with a friendly, positive attitude.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Possess teamwork orientation that supports and uplifts the work environment.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Experience managing budgets, payrolls, and schedules needed; accurate cash handling skills essential.
  • The ability to learn new technology and a working knowledge of the MS Office Suite. In addition, some knowledge of SalesVu, Canva, Teams, SharePoint, or OneNote is preferred.
  • Commitment to working across the organization to support the integration of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility principles into the Gardens' internal operations and its relationships with visitors and guests.

Primary Functions:

  • Hire, train, mentor, and complete performance evaluations of Gardenshop Floor Team Members and Gardenshop Floor Team Leads with the Gardenshop Director’s support.

  • Provide on-the-job coaching, performance feedback, and empower floor team members with skills to improve their confidence, knowledge, and communication skills.
  • Resolve guest issues and enforce policies while modeling excellent customer service and leading by example.
  • Create and maintain Floor Team Schedule, to ensure proper coverage and meet budgeted payroll costs. Review and approve floor team timecards and submit in a timely manner.
  • Count and manage cash in registers and the safe. Work with finance to maintain float.
  • Meet sales goals by communicating them clearly to the floor team and by fostering a collaborative group dedicated to helping our guests find what they want and showcasing the connections back to the Gardens and our community.
  • Maintain the shop to high standards providing excellent guest experience.
  • Work directly with the Gardenshop Inventory Manager when product is missing from the floor or needs restocking.
  • Disseminate Information from the Gardenshop Director and the Gardens to the floor team and relay feedback or concerns from the floor team back to the Gardenshop Director and management team.
