Job description

SUMMARY: Reporting to the Retail Credit Review Group Manager, the Credit Review Officer (CRO) provides credit risk assurance for residential, mortgage warehouse lending, and small business banking retail products including Small Business Administration (SBA), commercial credit cards, Homeowners Association (HOA), and municipal loans. The role may also support review and examination of commercial loan portfolios (up to 50% of the time).

Credit Review conducts independent, objective, and timely assessments of credit risk exposure and management practices by identifying, evaluating, measuring, and reporting the level and type of credit risk, as well as the effectiveness of portfolio oversight. Responsibilities include scoping, planning, conducting, documenting activities, drafting reports, and providing guidance to management and peers. The CRO is responsible for examinations and ongoing monitoring activities for assigned portfolios, maintaining high communication standards, leading meetings with senior leaders, and delivering reports and risk issues while monitoring their progress. The role requires meeting or exceeding production standards and effective communication within Credit Review and across the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Communicate effectively, including providing challenge and delivering findings to peers, management, and senior leaders, while maintaining independence.
  • Conduct and manage examinations and portfolio monitoring, including management interviews, risk monitoring, and data analysis.
  • Manage examination activities such as sample identification, pre-exam memos, coordinating meetings, managing timelines, reviewing work, and report writing.
  • Analyze credit files to assess accuracy of credit risk ratings, identify potential credit weaknesses, and review borrower financials and collateral documentation for compliance and sound banking practices.
  • Manage post-loan acquisition assurance processes for residential loans, analyzing vendor output, preparing reports, and communicating results to senior committees.
  • Consolidate examination findings, develop clear risk issues, communicate with management, and monitor remediation activities.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring for assigned portfolios, recognizing market and portfolio trends, risks, and management strategies.
  • Perform quality control reviews, ensuring documentation supports findings, and adhere to quality standards.
  • Assist leadership with training, mentoring, and process improvement recommendations.
  • Participate in or lead special projects as needed.
  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including anti-money laundering regulations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support and guide staff, provide feedback, and serve as activity lead when applicable.
EDUCATION
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree; advanced degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE
  • At least 10 years in consumer and/or small business credit, with experience in credit underwriting or bank examination preferred.
  • Strong understanding of credit risk management, financial analysis, and retail/ commercial credit principles.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Relevant certifications such as Bank Examiner, CFA, BAI Loan Review, CRC, CPA, as applicable.
