Job summary

Shepherd seeks a Commercial Casualty Underwriting Leader to define strategy, go-to-market, and profitable growth for a new retail casualty vertical. You will shape underwriting guidelines, leverage a robust broker network, and lead a team to scale a high-impact book.

Based in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, or Dallas–Fort Worth, you will partner with Product, Engineering and Data to deliver differentiated results and own the vertical’s performance metrics.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of commercial casualty underwriting, with deep expertise in retail middle market and large accounts across classes like real estate, retail, hospitality, manufacturing, and technology.
• Proven record of profitable growth: originating new business, quoting, binding, and building a casualty book while managing loss and combined ratios.
• Strong technical command of risk selection, exposure and loss analysis, pricing, and coverage across General Liability, Auto, Workers’ Comp and Excess Casualty.
• Experience structuring primary and excess casualty programs, including guaranteed-cost and loss-sensitive arrangements.
• Established retail broker relationships at regional and national levels.
• Leadership experience in hiring, coaching, and growing underwriting teams.

Responsibilities

• Define strategy for retail commercial casualty, including target classes, lines of business, limits, geographies, appetite, and growth targets.
• Develop underwriting guidelines, authority framework, referral rules, and rating approach.
• Design the submission-to-bind workflow with Product, Engineering, and Data.
• Underwrite new and renewal primary and excess casualty within your authority.
• Own premium, profit, loss ratio, retention, and expense results for the vertical.
• Leverage broker relationships to drive submissions and represent Shepherd with brokers and clients.
• Hire, coach, and grow a team of casualty underwriters and support staff.
• Collaborate with Claims, Actuarial, Customer Experience and Finance to ensure well-serviced underwriting.
• Work with Corporate Underwriting to set letters of authority and coach from audits.
