The Restorative Nursing Aide (RNA) supports residents in maintaining and improving their highest practicable level of physical function, mobility, and independence. This role carries out restorative nursing programs established in collaboration with Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and the nursing team in accordance with each resident’s individualized plan of care.

Reporting: This position reports directly to the Director of Nursing Services (DNS) or designee.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide restorative and rehabilitative nursing services, including ambulation, range‑of‑motion exercises, positioning, and other programs identified in residents’ care plans.
  • Encourage and assist residents in performing activities of daily living (ADLs) to promote independence and maintain functional abilities.
  • Carry out maintenance programs established and instructed by Physical Therapists and/or Occupational Therapists in accordance with physician orders and residents’ plans of care.
  • Demonstrate restorative techniques and procedures to residents and appropriate staff as needed.
  • Document resident participation, progress, and response to restorative services accurately and in accordance with facility policies and applicable regulations.
  • Observe residents’ functional abilities and communicate changes, concerns, or recommendations to nursing and rehabilitation staff promptly.
  • Work closely with nursing staff and licensed rehabilitation professionals to ensure restorative services meet each resident’s individual needs and goals.
  • Assist with and coordinate splinting, adaptive equipment, assistive devices, and other restorative programs as directed.
  • Assist residents with lifting, turning, repositioning, transferring, and transportation into and out of beds, chairs, and wheelchairs using proper body mechanics and appropriate equipment.
  • Provide weight‑bearing activities and exercises in accordance with each resident’s plan of care.
  • Obtain and document resident weights as directed.
  • Answer resident call lights promptly and provide assistance within the scope of the position.
  • Monitor the use and condition of adaptive equipment and assistive devices and report equipment requiring repair or replacement.
  • Maintain restorative and therapy areas and equipment in a clean, safe, and functional condition.
  • Follow infection prevention, safety, and established restorative nursing procedures.
  • Maintain resident confidentiality and protect residents’ rights, privacy, dignity, and personal property.
  • Report changes in resident condition, complaints, grievances, suspected abuse or neglect, safety hazards, equipment concerns, and potential infection risks according to facility policy.
  • Participate in required training and in‑service education, including applicable state, OSHA, infection prevention, and safety programs.
  • Assist during emergency situations and resident evacuations as directed.
  • Maintain dependable and punctual attendance and work collaboratively as part of the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For: Education and License Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Current and valid Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential as required by Washington State.
  • Current Restorative Nursing Assistant/Aide (RNA) training or certification as required by the facility.
  • Must meet applicable state and facility requirements for the position.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Previous experience providing personal care to individuals with physical, cognitive, or functional impairments in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Experience in skilled nursing, long‑term care, rehabilitation, or restorative nursing preferred.
  • Knowledge of restorative nursing techniques, including ambulation, range‑of‑motion exercises, positioning, transfers, and activities of daily living.
  • Ability to follow individualized care plans and instructions provided by licensed nursing and rehabilitation professionals.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills with the ability to interact effectively and compassionately with residents, families, staff, and outside healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to accurately document resident participation, functional status, and response to restorative programs.
  • Ability to work effectively with elderly residents and individuals who may be ill, disabled, cognitively impaired, emotionally distressed, or experiencing behavioral challenges.
  • Compassionate, patient, dependable, and committed to treating all residents with kindness, dignity, and respect.
  • Ability to safely use mechanical equipment and assistive devices after receiving appropriate training.
  • Ability to read, understand, and communicate information necessary to safely perform assigned responsibilities.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and move frequently throughout the workday.
  • Ability to bend, squat, twist, reach, push, pull, and stoop while performing resident care activities.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds and assist with heavier resident transfers and movement using appropriate assistance and mechanical devices in accordance with facility safety procedures.
  • Ability to safely assist residents with transfers, positioning, ambulation, and mobility.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

This position works in a skilled nursing environment and may involve exposure to infectious materials, bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals, odors, and other conditions commonly associated with direct resident care. The role may require work on weekends, holidays, or during emergency situations based on facility needs.
