Job summary

Make the Road New York (MRNY) is seeking a full-time Restorative Justice Coordinator for our School Based Team at Bushwick Campus Community School. The role supports restorative climate, equitable discipline, and family engagement across four high schools, with occasional evenings and weekends.

The position is in-person with one remote day per week. The candidate joins MRNY’s multi-service network advocating for immigrant and working-class communities, bringing expertise in restorative justice

Qualifications

• Experience using restorative justice practices such as circles and conferences for community building, accountability and reintegration.
• Experience in school-based settings, with knowledge of youth development theories.
• Strong outreach, interpersonal, writing, and communication skills; ability to work with diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with school administration, youth and MRNY staff to create a vision for restorative climate.
• Coordinate with the Campus team to develop campus-wide plans for restorative approaches.
• Facilitate ongoing restorative justice trainings for key stakeholders (youth, staff, families).
• Conduct yearly climate needs assessments to inform school vision and actions.
• Support development of RJ Youth Leaders to implement RJ practices in schools.
• Lead a cross-stakeholder action team to implement and sustain RJ plans.
• Act as point person for interventions (circles, mediations) and assist teachers.
• Track and report data on student interventions and outcomes.
• Participate in monthly community school team meetings.
• Ensure RJ practices align with racial justice goals.
• Handle special projects; include one remote work day per week.

Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 30,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer).

MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more.

Current Opening:

Restorative Justice Coordinator Make the Road New York (MRNY) a full time Restorative Justice Coordinator to be a part of our School Based Team at Bushwick Campus Community School to support and implement restorative justice. The position requires a flexible schedule. The Restorative Justice Coordinator will be partnering with four high schools in Bushwick Campus Community School. A community school is a hub of resources, programs, and services that contribute to meeting the needs and building on the strengths of the whole student, family and broader community. It supports a culture of community where trust and accountability among all stakeholders are nurtured and strengthened. Restorative Justice is an integral part of our community school strategy as it builds and strengthens relationships and supports all school stakeholders to respond to conflict and harm in a way that encourages social emotional growth. Applicants must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends. MRNY is a newly unionized workplace. This is a bargaining unit position.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Collaborate with school administration, youth and MRNY staff to create and maintain a vision for restorative school climate and culture at Bushwick Campus
• Collaborate with the Community School Director and the Campus Restorative Justice Action team to create campus-wide plan and individual school plans for supporting and sustaining the implementation of restorative approaches
• Facilitate ongoing restorative justice trainings for key school stakeholders (youth, staff, and families)
• Conduct a yearly school climate needs assessment, on the needs of students, families, administrators, and school community to continuously inform the school vision
• Support the development of a cohort of RJ Youth Leaders to implement RJ practices in our school
• Lead an action team of school stakeholders, youth, parents and/or school staff responsible for implementing and sustaining the restorative justice implementation planCoordinate and collaborate with the Community School team to implement community building circles, community events as well as workshops in restorative justice approaches with students and parents
• Act as the point person for out-of-classroom interventions (e.g., restorative conversations/mediations; circles; reintegration meetings) and support teachers in facilitating in-classroom interventions (e.g., talking circles/connection circles/community builders)
• Track and report data on all student interventions
• Participate in monthly community school team meetings
• Ensure restorative justice practices are integrated with a racial justice lens
• Special projects as assigned
• This position is a full-time in person position, however employer will use best efforts to allow for 1 day of remote work per week

Requirements:

• Eligible to work in the U.S
• Experience using restorative justice practices such as restorative circles and conferences for community building, accountability, in response to harm and conflict, and for re-integration.
• Experience working in school based settings, with knowledge of youth development theories
• Expertise in skills and knowledge of restorative practices and restorative justice including: philosophy, principles, models, interventions, forms, and techniques with a focus on communities of color
• Commitment to social and racial justice and knowledge of community organizations
• Strong outreach, interpersonal, writing, and communication skills;
• Strong ability to work with a team as well as independently;
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders including youth, educators, families and communities from a wide range of cultural, social and economic backgrounds
• Ability to communicate in Spanish a plus
• Self-starter with strong organizational skills and strong attention to detail
• Be highly professional and team oriented with a passion for excellence and eagerness to help the department meet our goals.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and complete assignments under strict deadlines with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.
• Ability to work under pressure required.
• Have a working knowledge of spreadsheets, Microsoft Office suite, and using a database (ideally Salesforce) to run reports.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
