Job summary

Community Mainstreaming Associates is seeking a part-time Respite Care Worker to provide in-home and community-based support to children and individuals with developmental disabilities in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, NY.

The role offers an afternoon/evening schedule (3:00 PM–7:00 PM) with a minimum of 3 hours per shift and pay of $17.00 per hour. You will help with daily living activities, community participation, and skill development while maintaining safety and respectful communication.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience as respite care worker, babysitter, caregiver, or related role.
  • Ability to communicate with nonverbal children 2–10.
  • Strong commitment to safety and well-being of children.
  • Availability to work a minimum of 3 hours per shift.
  • Ability to work independently with remote supervision.
  • Friendly, approachable, patient, and dependable.
  • Proficiency with computers.
  • Must possess and maintain a personal cell phone for work communication.
  • Preferred: experience in respite, direct support, childcare, or community-based services.
  • Experience supporting nonverbal children or children with developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction and support to strengthen community living and independent living skills.
  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living, personal care, health-related needs, and community participation.
  • Promote community inclusion by supporting individuals in community activities.
  • Encourage development of positive relationships, social skills, and communication.
  • Coordinate and participate in recreational, social, and community activities based on interests and goals.
  • Help individuals access appropriate community services and resources.
  • Support individuals in discussing behavioral concerns respectfully.
  • Encourage outcomes-focused decision making and problem solving.
  • Assist with communicating with Care Coordinators, vendors, healthcare providers, landlords and other service providers.
  • Provide supervision to promote health, safety, independence and well-being.
  • Follow individualized plans and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain professional communication with families and support teams.

Responsibilities:

Provide meaningful instruction and support to individuals to strengthen community living and independent living skills.

Assist individuals with activities of daily living, personal care, health-related needs, and community participation as appropriate.

Promote community inclusion by supporting individuals in accessing and participating in community activities.

Encourage the development of positive relationships, social skills, communication skills, and leisure interests.

Coordinate and participate in recreational, social, and community-based activities based on individual interests and goals.

Help individuals access appropriate community services, resources, and activities.

Support individuals in discussing behavioral concerns and other sensitive topics in an appropriate and respectful manner.

Encourage individuals to identify potential outcomes, make informed choices, and develop problem-solving skills.

Assist individuals with communicating effectively with Care Coordinators, vendors, healthcare providers, landlords, and other external service providers.

Provide appropriate supervision and guidance to promote health, safety, independence, and well-being.

Follow individualized support plans and organizational policies and procedures.

Maintain professional communication with families and members of the individual's support team.

Must possess and maintain a personal cell phone for work-related communication as a condition of employment.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Previous experience as a respite care worker, babysitter, caregiver, or in a related support role.

Ability to effectively communicate and work with nonverbal children between the ages of 2 and 10.

Strong commitment to the safety, supervision, and well-being of children.

Availability to work a minimum of 3 hours per shift.

Ability to work independently with remote supervision.

Friendly, approachable, patient, and dependable personality.

Proficiency with computers

Comfort providing appropriate physical support when needed, including situations where a nonverbal child may seek attention through physical contact.

Ability to communicate professionally with families and members of the support team.

Must possess and maintain a personal cell phone for work-related communication.

Preferred:

Previous experience providing respite, direct support, childcare, or community-based services.

Experience supporting nonverbal children or children with developmental disabilities.

Work Location

Nassau and Suffolk Counties, NY

This is a community-based position providing services in locations determined by the individual's needs and service plan.

Monday–Friday and/or Saturday–Sunday

3:00 PM–7:00 PM

Schedules may include holidays based on program and family needs.

Minimum shift: 3 hours.

Pay

$17.00 per hour

403(b) Retirement Plan: Part-time employees are eligible to participate.
