Job Overview

This role assumes responsibility for maintaining high patient care standards in all aspects of a hospital and/or clinic setting. The incumbent coordinates and supervises the schedules and activities of Therapists and EKG Technicians, attends meetings, communicates with physicians and supporting clinicians, participates in chart audits, continuous quality improvement, and assists with routine maintenance on equipment.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a resource person to the Respiratory Care staff and medical staff.
• Supervise staff through effective human resource management.
• Act as the chart auditor for all quality review in the department.
• Ensure proper administration and security of medications used in Respiratory Care.
• Maintain Blood Gas Analyzers and related equipment.
• Provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of patients in the assigned area.
• Adopt and adapt behavior to the specific patient population, respecting privacy, explaining services, obtaining permissions, and tailoring communication style.
• Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

• Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care Program or be grandfathered in by state of practice.
• Work Experience: At least 2 years as a technician or therapist in general adult care; neonatal and pediatric experience may be required for certain facilities.
• Certifications:
  • Current state license as a Respiratory Therapist.
  • Certification by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association.
  • Preferred: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Proficient computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
• Proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard use.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for presenting information clearly and professionally to a variety of individuals throughout the patient care process.

Physical and Environmental Demands

• Very Heavy Work – Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Physical Demands – Requires lifting, pushing, pulling, and maintaining a production rate pace; may involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, tissues, hazardous medications, and hazardous waste.
