Job summary

Cleveland Clinic Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital, located in Akron, OH, seeks a Respiratory Therapist to join our inpatient rehab team. The role oversees the Respiratory Therapy Department operations, ensures regulatory compliance, and participates in interdisciplinary patient care to support brain, spinal, and orthopedic rehab cases.

The RT will participate in rounds, support ventilation weaning processes, and contribute to quality initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Current State License to practice as Respiratory Therapist.
  • Active NBRC-credentialed RRT (NBRC) required.
  • Current BLS certification; ACLS required within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the daily operations of the Respiratory Therapy Department, including staffing, interviews, orientation, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance and that services align with scope of care for patients served.
  • Maintains Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) in coordination with Quality Management.
  • Participates in Interdisciplinary Team Meetings (IDT) and communicates patient goals and progress.
  • Coordinates pulmonary/physician rounds and facilitates weaning from mechanical ventilation where protocols exist.

Education

Active NBRC-credentialed RRT (NBRC)

Responsibilities
  • Oversees the daily operations of the Respiratory Therapy Department to include staff interviews, employment decision, orientation, performance evaluations, employee training and development, as well as inventory, equipment, and instrument issues.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory and licensing agencies and ensures departmental services provided are appropriate to the scope and level of care for the patients served.
  • Only applies to RT Supervisors/Safety Officers – Ensures regulatory compliance regarding all aspects of the Safety Officer Role and oversees all Safety Officer Functions including but not limited to the following: EOC Manual updates, Safety meetings, Safety Rounds, orientation and training, regulatory compliance and survey readiness.
  • Ensures ongoing Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) of departmental services in coordination with Quality Management assisting with routine data collection and reporting quality metrics.
  • Actively participates in Interdisciplinary Team Meetings (IDT) and reports patient goals, progress, and barriers to ensure delivery of quality patient care.
  • Coordinates and actively participates in Pulmonary/Physician Rounds and maintains a direct line of communication with all pulmonary physicians in order to facilitate/implement, and routinely monitor weaning patients from mechanical ventilation; if protocols do not exist, works toward implementation at the location.
  • Actively participates at General Orientation and provides an overview of the Respiratory Therapy Department to all new employees (RT Supervisor/Safety Officer must also present the Safety section to provide safety orientation).
  • Works in collaboration with the Rehab Leadership to create, advise, implement and promote the mobility program for all ventilated patients where applicable.
  • Ensures daily operations function within the budget: Routinely monitors salaries, wages, and benefits in conjunction with the Respiratory Therapy Hours Per Patient Day, safely flexing personnel when appropriate.
  • Accepts routine patient assignments functioning within the job description for Respiratory Therapist in order to maintain budget compliance and clinical skill‑set.
  • Maintains oversight of assessment and intervention skills and provides ongoing education and competency assessment, regarding respiratory care practices, for all non-respiratory personnel as needed.
  • Acts as a resource for case management for those patients requiring respiratory services, to ensure a safe and efficient discharge process.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current State License
  • Active Registered Respiratory Therapist credential (RRT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) required
  • Current BLS certification, ACLS required within 6 months of hire. (Agency RT must have ACLS upon first shirt).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) years’ experience as a Respiratory Therapist in an Acute Care setting preferred
  • One year supervisory experience within the last three years is preferred
