Job summary

Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH, is seeking a Respiratory Therapist for a 0.75 FTE night shift to support pediatric cardiopulmonary care.

You will apply respiratory care principles, develop care plans, educate families, and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure patient-centered outcomes.

This role requires Ohio licensure and AHA BLS certification.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care from a CoARC-accredited program is required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist with NBRC and Ohio license is required.
  • AHA BLS certification is required; additional certifications may be required after hire.

Responsibilities

  • Applies knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology in patient care.
  • Offers preventative care, education, and treatment for cardiopulmonary deficiencies.
  • Develops and implements care plans and disease-management programs per guidelines.
  • Provides Respiratory Care using a Family Centered Approach.
  • Communicates patient needs to the care team and participates in quality improvement.

Job Description Summary

Applies scientific principles to prevent, identify, and treat acute or chronic dysfunction of the cardiopulmonary system, ensuring best patient outcomes. Authorized to access the unit medication rooms or bedside medication drawers to retrieve medications they are authorized to administer.

Overview

0.75 FTE, average of 30 hours per week. Night shift.

Essential Functions
  • Applies knowledge of the scientific principles underlying cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, as well as biomedical engineering and technology.
  • Offers effective preventative care to, as well as assess, educate, and treat patients with cardiopulmonary deficiencies.
  • Practices Respiratory Care under medical direction across the health care continuum. Develops and implements effective care plans, patient-driven protocols, disease-based clinical pathways, and disease management programs according to evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
  • Provides Respiratory Care using a Family Centered Approach.
  • Assesses individualized patient cardiopulmonary needs and communicates them to the care team.
  • Embraces the interdisciplinary care model and stays aware of changes, participating in data collection or auditing, understanding Quality Improvement, and representing staff at relevant staff meetings, then reporting information and updates back to staff.
Education Requirement

Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree from a CoARC-accredited Respiratory Care program, required.

Licensure Requirement
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care, required.
  • Current Ohio license to practice respiratory care, required.
Certifications
  • AHA BLS, required.
  • Current PALS or NRP certification may be required depending on unit of hire.
  • Additional certifications may be required after hire.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills required in interactions with patients and parents, and hospital staff.
Physical Requirements
  • OCCASIONALLY: Bend/twist, Biohazard waste, Chemicals/Medications, Flexing/extending of neck, Lifting / Carrying: 21-40 lbs, 41-60 lbs, 61-100 lbs, Machinery, Pushing / Pulling: 0-25 lbs, 26-40 lbs, 41-60 lbs, 61-100 lbs, Reaching above shoulder, Squat/kneel.
  • FREQUENTLY: Blood and/or Bodily Fluids, Climb stairs/ladder, Communicable Diseases and/or Pathogens, Computer skills, Fume /Gases /Vapors, Hand use: grasping, gripping, turning, Lifting / Carrying: 0-10 lbs, 11-20 lbs, Patient Equipment, Repetitive hand/arm use, Sitting, Standing, Walking.
  • CONTINUOUSLY: Audible speech, Color vision, Decision Making, Depth perception, Hearing acuity, Interpreting Data, Peripheral vision, Problem solving, Seeing – Far/near.
