Job summary

Northwell Health in New York is seeking an experienced Respiratory Therapist to perform comprehensive assessments and deliver prescribed therapies. You will educate patients and families, operate and maintain respiratory care equipment, and collaborate with the care team to optimize cardiopulmonary function.

The position requires an Associate's Degree or equivalent, a NYS Respiratory Therapist license, and at least one year of clinical experience (preferred).

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree or equivalent is required.
• Certificate from an accredited RT program is required.
• Current NYS Respiratory Therapist license is required.

Responsibilities

• Reviews data in the patient record including history, lab data, radiological studies, progress notes, respiratory and cardiovascular monitoring data.
• Documents / records respiratory therapy data as required. Communicates data to appropriate members of the health care team.
• Assesses patient's overall cardiopulmonary status using observation, auscultation, lab/bed-side tests, non-invasive monitoring and interview techniques.
• Interviews patient to determine orientation, dyspnea, activities of daily living, social support, nutritional status, and learning needs.
• Performs and interprets bedside procedures including pulse oximetry, ABG analysis, Co-oximetry, mixed venous sampling, hemodynamic and pulmonary mechanics.
• Obtains data by calculating lung compliance, airway resistance, work of breathing, PaO2 /FIO2 ratio, and other noninvasive monitoring.
• Selects, assembles, and checks equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness.
• Performs quality control procedures for blood analysis devices, diagnostic equipment, ventilators, and gas metering devices.
• Explains planned therapy and goals to patients and evaluates, monitors and records patient responses.
• Communicates results of therapy to appropriate members of the healthcare team.
• Performs blood gas sampling including arterial punctures and sampling from arterial lines and Swan-Ganz catheters.
• Monitors mechanical ventilator patients including airway pressures, tidal volumes, respiratory rate, I:E ratio, FiO2, cuff pressure, and alarms.
• Modifies mechanical ventilation to reflect changes in the respiratory care plan.
• Assesses ventilation weaning parameters and possible extubations.
• Instructs, initiates, and adjusts mechanical nasal mask and negative pressure ventilation to achieve adequate ventilation.
• Modifies artificial airway management including endotracheal tube positioning and cuff pressure monitoring.
• Administers medicated aerosol therapy and assists in suctioning when indicated.
• Makes modifications to therapeutic procedures based on patient response.
• Modifies oxygen and specialty gas therapy as needed.
• Explains procedures to staff, patients, or families.
• Assists pulmonary physicians as required.
• Initiates, conducts, or modifies respiratory care techniques in emergencies.

Education

Associate's Degree or equivalent
