Job summary

This role offers a generous sign-on bonus up to $20,000 with a 2-year commitment. Responsibilities include assessing patients, selecting therapies, operating ventilators, monitoring responses, and collaborating with physicians. Schedule features rotating days, weekends, and holidays with two 12-hour shift options.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a CoARC approved respiratory program.
  • BLS/CPR certification required.
  • RRT or CRT NBRC certification as applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Read prescription and review patient information to determine therapy needs.
  • Determine inhalant administration methods per physician orders.
  • Supervise students during training.
  • Set up and operate ventilators and gas delivery systems.
  • Monitor treatment parameters and adjust as needed.
  • Evaluate medical orders for appropriateness.
  • Observe patient responses; track vitals and ABGs.
  • Perform bronchopulmonary drainage and assist breathing exercises.
  • Consult with physicians on adverse reactions.

This position is eligible for a generous Sign-On Bonus! UPMC is excited to offer up to a $20,000 Sign-on Bonus to eligible candidates (with a 2-year work commitment)! *Candidates will be hired into the appropriate title, pay range, and sign-on bonus based on qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Reads prescription, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment, such as type and duration of therapy, and medication dosages.

  • Determines most suitable method of administering inhalants, precautions to be observed, and modifications which may be needed that will be compatible with physician's orders

  • Supervises students during training.

  • Sets up and operates devices, such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.

  • Operates equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment, such as volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature, and to administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs to patients.

  • Observes equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy.

  • Evaluates the appropriateness of medical orders.

  • Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.

  • Performs bronchopulmonary drainage and assists patient in performing breathing exercises.

  • Consults with physician in the event of adverse reactions.

Preferred Experience: Critical care experience.

Schedule: Rotating days, weekends, and holidays. Rotating shifts include: 6:30AM-6:30PM and 6:30PM-6:30AM.

CRT:

  • Graduate of a Co ARC (Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) approved Respiratory program required OR students who have received a temporary license are permitted to begin employment with approval from the Human Resources department along with their official transcripts.

  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation required.

  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRTT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required prior to expiration of temporary practice permit.

  • Respiratory therapists who receive their CRT credential from the NBRC after July 1, 2002 are required to maintain certification under the NBRC requirements

RRT:

  • Graduate of a Co ARC (Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) approved Respiratory program required.

  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required.

  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation required.

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required.

  • Respiratory therapists who receive their RRT credential from the NBRC after July 1, 2002 are required to maintain certification under the NBRC requirements.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.Effective 11/1/2025, those practicing in New York with valid NY Respiratory Therapist license must also hold valid RRT certification.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Osteopathic Respiratory Care OR Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP)

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal
