- Uses respiratory therapy processes to support patient assessment, utilizing skills such as pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiograph, hemodynamic values, laboratory values, and blood gases and electrolytes analysis. Can identify and address the specific needs of the patient population within the department.
- Operates specialized ventilators in critical and non-critical care settings. Assists physicians with bedside or other procedures as applicable.
- Provides medication treatments and therapies as ordered by physicians and/or according to patient-driven respiratory protocols (PDRP).
- Cleans, maintains, and ensures proper functionality of equipment. Troubleshoots equipment issues and identifies the need for service or repair.
- Educates and instructs patients on the purpose, technique, self-care, goals of therapy, and disease management.
- Facilitates clinical problem solving and collaborates with other departments to provide patient education.
- Under physician direction, adapts and complies with policies and procedures across various service areas, performs assigned tasks, and maintains performance standards and organizational behaviors.
- Demonstrates effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills.
- Promotes a safety culture by recognizing and applying safety measures to prevent patient harm, reporting safety events and near misses promptly, and assisting in corrective actions.
- Provides age-appropriate care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles and interpreting patient data to meet individual needs, as detailed in department standards.
Major Responsibilities- Supports patient assessment using respiratory therapy skills, including diagnostics and blood gas analysis, addressing department-specific needs.
- Operates ventilators and assists with procedures in critical and non-critical care settings.
- Administers medications and therapies as prescribed.
- Maintains and troubleshoots equipment.
- Educates patients on therapy techniques and disease management.
- Collaborates with departments for patient education and problem solving.
- Adapts to policies across service areas and performs assigned duties maintaining standards.
- Ensures safety protocols are followed, reports safety issues, and participates in corrective actions.
- Provides age-specific care, assessing patient data and needs across the lifespan.
License/Registration/Certification- State-issued Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
- Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) certification (to be obtained within 0 months unless exempted).
- Respiratory Therapist certification (CRT).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (to be obtained within 0 months unless exempted).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (to be obtained within 0 months unless exempted).
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (to be obtained within 0 months unless exempted).
- Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Specialist (NPS) certification (to be obtained within 0 months unless exempted).
Level of Education: Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Decision-making skills for patient care and equipment use.
- Proficiency with computers, electronic mail, and medical record systems.
- Excellent communication and human relation skills.
- Ability to build rapport with patients, team members, and physicians.
- Time management skills with ability to prioritize tasks.
- At least one year of RT experience.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions- Ability to adapt to changing assignments and float within the site.
- Physical ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach, and twist frequently.
- Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist, 20 lbs. overhead, and carry up to 40 lbs.
- Push/pull with 30 lbs. force, perform transfers with assistance.
- Use of foot pedals, exposure to chemicals, blood, and body fluids, requiring protective gear.
- Functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch, with fine motor skills for procedures.
