Job summary

UnityPoint Health in Cedar Rapids seeks an experienced Respiratory Therapist to provide expert care across inpatient and outpatient settings, from neonates to adults. You will deliver safe respiratory therapies, monitor patients, document thoroughly, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize outcomes.

This role requires an accredited Respiratory Therapy degree, NBRC-registered status, current state licensure, and certifications including BLS, ACLS, and NRP within onboarding.

Qualifications

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program is required.
• Graduate of a CoARC approved Respiratory Care program is required.
• Current licensure to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in state(s) of practice is required.
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (NBRC) is required.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients' respiratory conditions by conducting physical examinations and reviewing medical histories.
• Administer respiratory therapies and diagnostic testing for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and neonatal patients (medical gas delivery, nebulization, chest physiotherapy, airway management, and ventilation).
• Perform arterial blood gas collection and analysis, pulmonary function testing, and pulse oximetry.
• Monitor responses to treatments and adjust care or elevate concerns as appropriate.
• Manage artificial airways and troubleshoot respiratory equipment to ensure safety and effectiveness.
• Be an active member of medical emergency response teams.
• Maintain accurate documentation in the patient EMR.
• Communicate with interdisciplinary teams regarding patient status and plans.
• Provide patient and family education on respiratory pathophysiology and therapies.
• Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment; perform cleaning and disinfection.
• Serve as preceptor/mentor for students and new staff; participate in quality improvement committees.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients' respiratory conditions by conducting physical examinations and reviewing medical histories.
• Administerrespiratory therapies includingmedical gasdelivery, nebulization, chest physiotherapy, airway management, and mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive) for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and neonatal patients.
• Perform diagnostic testing such as arterial blood gas (ABG) collectionand analysis,pulmonary function testing,andpulse oximetry
• Monitor patient physiological responses to treatments and adjust care or elevate concerns as appropriate.
• Manage artificial airways and troubleshoot respiratory equipment to ensure patient safety and therapy effectiveness.
• Active member of the medical emergencyresponse teams.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation in thepatientelectronic medical record (EMR.).
• Communicateand collaborateeffectively with interdisciplinary teams regarding patient status and therapy plans.
• Provide assistancewith internal patienttransports.
• Provide patient and family education on respiratory pathophysiologyandpharmacologic therapies.
• Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot respiratorytherapyequipment.
• Perform routine cleaning and disinfection of respiratory therapy equipment.
• Serve as a preceptor and mentor for respiratory therapy students and new staff.
• Participate in departmental and multidisciplinary committees focused on quality improvement, patient safety, and clinicaloutcomes.

Qualifications

Education:

• Associate's orBachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapyfrom an accredited program required.
• Graduate of a CoARC approved Respiratory Care programrequired.

• Must have current licensure in good standing to practice as a RespiratoryCare Practitioner in State(s) of Practice required.
• RCPIA
• Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) required.
• Mandatory Reporterrequired within 90 days of hire.
• Basic Life Support (BLS)certificationrequired within 90 days of hire.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificationrequired within 90 days of hire.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certificationrequired within 90 days of hire.
