Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL seeks a Respiratory Therapist to provide and coordinate comprehensive respiratory care in the NICU, PICU, and pediatric units, using evidence-based practices to ensure safety and high-quality patient experiences. Responsibilities include evaluating patients, operating ventilators, assisting with procedures, educating families, and maintaining equipment.

Requires RCP license, NBRC credentials, BLS, and an associate degree in respiratory care; night

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited respiratory care program; minimum associate degree.
  • RCP license issued by the state of practice.
  • NBRC credential (RRT/CRT) within 12 months or CRT credential if obtained earlier.
  • BLS certification for Healthcare Providers.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients using respiratory therapy processes and correlate with diagnostics and labs.
  • Identify neonatal/pediatric-specific needs.
  • Operate ventilators in critical and non-critical care settings.
  • Assist physicians with bedside procedures as applicable.
  • Administer therapies per physician orders and protocols.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment; report service needs.
  • Educate patients and families on technique and disease management.
  • Collaborate with other departments for patient education and safety.

Location: Advocate Children’s Hospital, 4440 W. 95th Street, Oak Lawn, IL
Shift: Night (12‑hour shift, 7:00p.m. – 7:00a.m.)

Summary

Responsible for providing and coordinating comprehensive respiratory care in the Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU, Pediatric Cardiac ICU, Pediatric General Floors, and Pediatric Emergency Department. The role uses evidence‑based practices, clinical decision making, and skilled communication to create the safest patient environment and the best patient experience.

Major Responsibilities
  • Use respiratory therapy processes to assess patients, integrating pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiographs, hemodynamic and laboratory values, and blood gas/ electrolyte correlations.
  • Identify and address special needs specific to the neonatal/pediatric population.
  • Operate specialized ventilators in critical and non‑critical care settings.
  • Assist physicians with bedside or other procedures as applicable.
  • Administer medication treatments and therapies per physician orders and patient‑driven respiratory protocols.
  • Clean, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment, and identify service or repair needs.
  • Educate and instruct patients on technique, self‑care, goals of therapy, and disease management.
  • Facilitate clinical problem solving and collaborate with other departments to provide patient education.
  • Adapt and comply with policies and procedures for each service area, perform assigned tasks, and maintain performance standards.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills; provide clear, concise, timely patient handoffs.
  • Promote a culture of safety; recognize and apply safety measures to prevent harm; report safety events and near misses promptly.
  • Teach, educate, precept new teammates, orient new staff, and provide student instruction.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary for age‑appropriate patient care; assess data relative to patient status and interpret necessary information.
Licensure, Registration, and Certification Required
  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the state of practice.
  • Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) within 12 months, or active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential issued by the NBRC if obtained prior to January12023.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
Other Requirements
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited respiratory care program, minimum associate degree.
  • Experience: No experience required.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Effective organizational, interpersonal, and problem‑solving skills; proficiency with electronic medical records; excellent written and verbal communication; rapport building with patients, families, and physicians; time management and multitasking in a highly interrupted environment.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50lb from knee or floor; lift 40lb at waist height; carry 20lb overhead; push or pull using 30lb of force; perform transfer of a 150‑lb patient on a sheet across 2ft with a second person; maintain safe body mechanics.
