The Respiratory Therapist RRT assumes responsibility for managing and delivering patient care in their assigned areas. This position requires population-specific competencies and adherence to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of a Registry Eligible Respiratory Therapy School
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (graduates will have 12 months to become registered; failure to do so will result in a transition to a CRT Therapist position)
  • Current Respiratory Care Practitioner License issued by the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision (OSBMLS). Temporary practice letters may be used until full licensure is granted.
  • Requires 1 year of full-time experience in respiratory care or recent clinical practicum in an accredited respiratory care program
  • Must be RRT and Conscious Sedation Certified before participating in IV Conscious Sedation procedures
  • Effective communication skills in English (written and verbal)
  • BLS certification or must obtain within 60 days of hire (DME department only)
Responsibilities

The Respiratory Therapist RRT's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Administering therapeutic services and diagnostic tests to various patient types
  • Setting up equipment and assisting physicians during procedures
  • Performing assessments, including patient history, chest x-rays, vital signs, blood gases, and progress notes, and communicating findings to physicians (not applicable to DME)
  • Performing arterial punctures or blood gas analyses (not applicable to DME)
  • Performing intubation where credentialed and approved
  • Providing onboarding education to new staff and assisting students
  • Scheduling PAP Therapy appointments and maintaining documentation
  • Educating patients on DME respiratory equipment
  • Downloading PAP therapy results routinely
  • Maintaining inventory of PAP Therapy equipment
  • Continuing education on PAP Therapy guidelines

The RRT reports to the assigned Supervisor. The position may involve physical demands and respiratory fit testing. Exposure to hazards such as infections, chemicals, and workplace violence is possible. Follow universal safety precautions. The role may involve multiple floors, on-call status, and exposure to noise, odors, and chemicals.
