Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist II is responsible for medication administration and implementing respiratory care based on expanded knowledge, experience, and the evaluate-and-treat process. The RT II is responsible for delivering patient care in complex, multiple problem-patient care situations, primarily in critical care areas with protocol ventilator management, significant independent decision-making, and self-direction. Responsibilities also include patient and family education, coordination of activities, staff development, and professional growth. The RT II provides care with awareness of population-specific needs, addressing biological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and educational needs. Participation in the education of new employees and others is also expected.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Provides Customer Service
  • Completion of patient care, documentation, and education
  • Team approach to service
  • Promotes a team spirit and positive work environment
  • Provides supportive environment for students and staff
Administers Quality Patient Care
  • Performs patient assessment and therapy planning
  • Collaborates with healthcare team members
  • Verifies orders and administers aerosolized medication, bronchial hygiene, volume expansion, oxygen, and medical gas therapy
  • Performs ventilator management, weaning, waveform graphic interpretation, airway management (intubation, extubation, trach care)
  • Performs arterial blood gas sampling and analysis
  • Educates patients and mentors new employees, students, and peers
  • Assists in invasive and non-invasive procedures, cardiac services, pulmonary diagnostics (location-specific)
Provides Safe & Quality Environment
  • Ensures accurate electronic orders, charting, and charging
  • Promotes patient safety (Medication Safety, NPSG, etc.)
  • Supports Performance Improvement initiatives
  • Promotes evidence-based practice
  • Reviews revised and new DPPs
Other Duties and Compliance

Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all policies, standards, and codes of conduct.

Minimum Education and Certification Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program (CoARC or CAAHP) with at least 20 quarter hours of science
  • Associate's Degree required; Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • All certifications required upon hire: Registered Respiratory Therapist, Respiratory Care Professional, BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP (Instructor or Provisional as applicable)
Experience and Skills
  • 0-2 years of clinical experience, with at least 6 months in critical care
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking, and computer skills
