Job summary

Medina Regional Hospital in Hondo, TX seeks a Respiratory Therapist to provide respiratory therapy modalities, diagnostic tests, and patient care per physician orders. Works under supervision of medical and technical directors, performing ventilation support, arterial puncture, and essential respiratory procedures.

Responsibilities include data collection, QA reporting, and assisting with annual skills training.

Qualifications

• One year certificate from college or technical and six months related experience and/or training.
• BLS required within 30 days of hire; ACLS required within 90 days of hire; NRP required within 90 days of hire; PALS required within 6 months of hire.
• Texas license to practice Respiratory Care; must be registered or certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
• Bachelor’s Degree related to Respiratory Therapy preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and administers respiratory therapy treatments per physician order.
• Chest percussion, postural drainage, and incentive spirometry.
• Operates respiratory equipment including ventilators and oxygen delivery
• Monitors patient responses and reports to supervisor; ensures equipment safety.
• Attends in-service trainings and may mentor new hires.

POSITION PURPOSE:

Provides respiratory therapy modalities to patients in accordance with a physician’s order and hospital policies and procedures. Provide diagnostic tests on patients in accordance with a physician’s order and hospital policies and procedures. Works under the direct and indirect supervision of the medical director and technical director of the department. Provides prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill, injured, and disabled persons in the hospital. Must have the ability to comprehend and follow routine written or verbal instruction or directions. Adheres to Standard Precautions and policies and procedures. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Prepares and administers various respiratory therapy treatment modalities, such as: Medication nebulizer treatments by small volume and large volume nebulizer.
• Chest percussion and postural drainage.
• Incentive spirometry.
• Intermittent positive pressure breathing.
• Breathing exercises.
• Diaphragmatic breathing.
• Sputum induction.
• Nasal tracheal aspiration.
• Arterial puncture.
• Oxygen administration mask. Cannula or oxy hood.
• Initiation of mechanical ventilation & BIPAP and maintenance of ventilation. Performing pulmonary function testing.
• Holter and cardiac event monitoring.
• Collection of data in compliance with Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Plans. Responsible for reporting faulty equipment to the appropriate supervisor.
• Any other job duty as allowed by licensure.
• Attends in-service training at the request of their Director, including hospital orientation and Annual Skills Fair.
• Will be preceptor to new hires as requested. Complete other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:

• One year certificate from college or technical and six months related experience and/or training; BLS required within 30 days of hire; ACLS required within 90 days of hire; NRP required within 90 days of hire; PALS required within 6 months of hire.
• In accordance with Senate Bill 1007, June 15, 1985, Texas Legislature, Texas Department of Health certificate to practice Respiratory Care, must be current and must be kept current at all times. Must be Registered or Certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
• Bachelor’s Degree related to Respiratory Therapy preferred.
• Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served as applicable.
