Schedule: PRN, Day Shift M-F, 6am-6pm
Salary: $27-30/ Hr.
Competitive PRN rates 15-20% higher than base rates
25% weekend differential
Duties & Responsibilities:
Respiratory Therapy:
- Respiratory Therapy treatments
- Administer prescribed medications, including bronchodilators, via inhalation.
- Administer humidified therapeutic gases, including high-humidity therapy as prescribed.
- Induce from the patient a sputum specimen for cytological or bacterial examination.
- Perform incentive spirometry treatments, as prescribed.
- Perform bronchial drainage and chest physiotherapy as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.
- Critical Care
- Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Assist in transport of critical patients as required.
- Perform airway care, including tracheo-bronchial aspiration, and other procedures aimed at establishing and/or maintaining natural and artificial airways as outlined in the departmental policies and procedures.
- Diagnostics
- Perform arterial punctures in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Perform pulmonary function tests in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Basic Patient Care
- Review physician orders, collaborate with medical staff to plan or provide treatment.
- Monitor patient conditions during treatments, procedures, or activities and consult with physician to achieve maximum patient benefit.
- Obtain appropriate patient history, answer patient questions, and explain procedures to patients or family members.
- Maintain accurate records of patient care and treatments; prepare written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports and other such reports.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service with phone etiquette, scheduling patients, and helping to coordinate all Respiratory Therapy activities.
- Departmental
- Assist the department, hospital, and profession with public relations by giving directions, answering questions and assisting with programs for public visitors, patient’s families, physicians, etc.
- Establish and maintain positive communication and relationships within the hospital.
- Promote and support the introduction and demonstration of new techniques, protocols, and equipment.
- Assist in maintaining departmental facilities, equipment, supplies and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort, and safety of patients, visitors, and staff.
- Assist with quality improvement, infection control, department, and hospital safety programs, providing recommendations for departmental continuous improvement.
- Select, operate, and perform regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on all equipment.
- Assist the Department Manager with occasional data collecting and entry for budget purposes.
- Perform office filing and record maintenance for all cardiopulmonary services, as needed.
- Education
- Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, and in-service meetings.
- All other duties, as assigned.
Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab:
- Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab Treatments
- Assesses the holistic needs of the patients and their families.
- Initiates the appropriate level of education and exercise after assessment and referral to nursing process.
- Charts complete, succinct and legible notes in the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab Progress Records (or when needed, nurses and/or progress records). Documentation should address identified holistic needs and initial steps to meet needs.
- Provides education to the patient in changing identified cardiovascular risk factors.
- Assists patients to reach their maximal level of exercise performance in accordance with their personal goals and physical illness.
- Keeps abreast of changes in the field of cardiovascular care and the completion of exercises.
- Consults with physicians and referring hospitals appropriate to meet the patient’s needs.
- Identifies and reports significant physical and/or emotional needs to physicians.
- Monitors cardiac electrical activity in the rehab area. Interprets rhythms and reports significant dysrhythmias to patients’ physicians.
- Monitor O2 sats for the pulmonary rehab patients and guides them in exercise to prevent too low of sats.
- Helps prepare patient/family to continue with home exercise program after discharge.
- Teaches group classes as already developed and assesses and develops new programs in conjunction with departmental policy.
- Accepts responsibility for involvement in community care and provides focus to cardiovascular education and support to the public.
- Identifies day-to-day unit needs and takes initiative to meet needs (i.e., unit supplies, printing, and equipment).
- Complies with all Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab policies and procedures at Ellsworth County Medical Center.
- All other duties, as assigned.
Education & Certifications/ Registrations:
- Associate degree in respiratory therapy required; completion of AARC approved RRT program.
- Registered in the State of Kansas as a Respiratory Therapist, licensed as a Registered or Certified Respiratory Therapist.
- CPR certification required.
- ACLS required.
Experience & Skills Preferred:
- Minimum of two years in the medical field.
- Previous experience preferred.
- Service oriented, patient centered.
- Excellent skills in organization, prioritization, and multi-tasking.
- Strong attention to detail and technical skills with ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Excellent interpersonal relations with proficient verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain diverse technical problems in easy-to-understand language.
- Strong independent judgment, critical thinking, inductive/deductive reasoning, and decision-making skills.
- Active listening and learning skills - Listening to others, not interrupting, open to new ideas, innovative.
- Must have advanced computer and Microsoft program skills, electronic medical record experience, and ability to operate necessary therapy equipment.
