Overview
The Respiratory Therapist is a member of the interdisciplinary team working in collaboration with the Physician. The Respiratory Therapist utilizes the care process consistent with their license and certification including initiation of interventions within their scope of practice. The Registered Nurse is responsible to oversee any necessary coordination of the interdisciplinary plan of care and ensures consistency with the medical treatment plan.
Responsibilities
- Assessment – identify, gather, and organize subjective and objective data pertaining to the patient/family/significant other.
- Planning – identify actual or potential problems and desired outcomes (goals) that result in a documented plan of care; the plan provides direction for the patient/family/significant other and the interdisciplinary team.
- Intervention – implement specific interventions or orders consistent with the plan of care and medical treatment plan.
- Evaluation – determine the effectiveness of interventions in achieving the plan of care and decide on revisions to problems, goals, plan of care, and interventions; document required actions; reassess as needed.
- Patient care outcomes include prioritizing problems relative to biophysical, psychological, environmental, self-care, educational, and social status; establish goals aligned with identified problems; provide education to support patient empowerment.
- All licensed, certified care providers may document the assessment, plan, intervention, and evaluation within their scope of practice and knowledge; patient care activities are administered according to standards, procedural guidelines, and organizational policy.
Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of an AMA approved school of respiratory care.
- License/Certification: Licensed by the State Board of Respiratory Care and must be Registered Respiratory Therapist; current BLS/HCP required; certification in ACLS, PALS, or NRP.
- Experience: Prior experience preferred but not required. Pool candidates require 3 years of critical care experience. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents will be trained and must demonstrate skill within 30–60 days from date of hire.
