Job summary

Gurwin Healthcare System is seeking per diem Respiratory Therapists to join Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Commack, NY. The role supports residents on 12-hour shifts, with every other weekend coverage.

Ideal candidates hold NYS licensure (RRT or CRT) and BLS, with 3–5 years of respiratory therapy experience. Responsibilities include providing respiratory care per physician orders, assessing patients, managing equipment, and documenting care.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an JRCRTE - AMA accredited program in Respiratory Care.
• Licensed by the NYS Department of Education as a Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Technician (CRT).
• BLS certification required.
• 3–5 years of respiratory therapy experience preferred.
• Member of the American Association for Respiratory Care preferred.

Responsibilities

• Make decisions within respiratory care and advise the physician as indicated.
• Provide respiratory care to all residents per physician orders.
• Understand dementia-related behaviors and respond appropriately.
• Recognize pain signs and take appropriate actions.
• Deliver respiratory modalities as ordered and maintain equipment as needed.
• Ensure geriatric/sub-acute care requirements are met with proper communication.
• Assess respiratory status and determine need for equipment/inventory and repair.
• Ensure documentation of assessments, plans, and care summaries.
• Educate residents, families and staff on pulmonary hygiene and equipment use.
• Coordinate with nursing staff to optimize patient care.

12‑hour shift days or nights - you will be scheduled one weekend shift every other weekend.

Requirements:

• Graduation from a JRCRTE - AMA accredited program in Respiratory Care. Licensed by the NYS Department of Education as a Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Technician (CRT). Basic Life Support. A minimum of 3‑5 years of respiratory therapy experience preferred. Member of the American Association for Respiratory Care preferred.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Candidates must be able to make decisions within the scope of respiratory care and make appropriate recommendations as indicated to the responsible physician.

• Responsible for the respiratory care rendered to all residents. Follows policy and clinical procedures in respiratory care as ordered by the responsible physician.

• Knowledge of dementia population and dealing with related behaviors.

• Able to recognize when a resident is in pain and take appropriate actions.

• Provides short and/or long‑term support of patients having increased chronic or acute respiratory difficulty by providing respiratory modalities, as per physician orders.

• Facility personnel having direct and consistent clinical contact with residents must have the skills necessary to address the specialized needs of geriatric and sub‑acute/rehab populations. This includes recognition of the relative and respective physical, psychosocial and emotional changes that occur at different stages in life, the understanding of which promotes the ability to provide quality care.

• The aforementioned must demonstrate proficiency upon hire, after orientation and on an annual basis in the acquisition, interpretation and communication of age‑specific data as it pertains to our residents.

• Assesses the patient’s physical problems such as signs and symptoms of respiratory distress, failure, etc.

• Determines need for respiratory equipment, and other related equipment supplies inventory of same and need for

• repair or replacement as appropriate.

• Assesses the patient’s compliance with the therapeutic regimen and discusses with the medical and nursing staffs any areas of non‑compliance to determine possible change in treatment plan.

• lnservices patient, family and staff in pulmonary hygiene and the use of the respiratory equipment to be used by

• the patient when appropriate.

• Communicates information on a regular basis to the nurse who is responsible for and coordinates patient care.

• Provides timely documentation including, but not limited to; assessments, plans, goals, care, summary reports and related data.
