Responsible for transporting neonates and pediatric patients from referral facilities by air and ground to Brenner Children's Hospital, following Office of Emergency Medical Services (NCOEMS) guidelines. Performs advanced practice skills as needed and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to provide quality, age/developmentally appropriate care.

Education/Experience:

Graduate of an AMA-approved two or four-year program for respiratory care, or meets the NBRC requirements for registry examinations. Two years' experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist and two years' clinical experience with critical care patients (neonatal/pediatric preferred).

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration:

Maintains required competency assessments. Required: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), licensed in North Carolina, current BCLS, NRP, PALS, ACLS, ITLS or Pediatric ITLS. Preferred: AARC Certification as Neonatal Pediatric Specialist (NPS).

Essential Functions:

  1. Promotes a cooperative work environment through communication and team building.
  2. Ensures patient care standards are met to optimize outcomes.
  3. Maintains a safe environment during transport for all passengers.
  4. Provides age-appropriate respiratory therapies, performs point-of-care testing, and ensures compliance with policies and regulations.
  5. Completes documentation for patient records and billing.
  6. Provides educational support to allied health practitioners.
  7. Delivers care in accordance with Age-Specific Care Guidelines.
  8. Attends in-services, staff meetings, and team conferences.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks under stress.
  • Professional interaction with medical staff.
  • Demonstrates ongoing professional involvement.
  • Performs advanced practice skills such as intubation, arterial sampling, and intraosseous cannulation.
  • Competent in administering approved pharmacologic agents.

  • Exposure to blood products and infectious diseases.
  • Handling of hazardous chemicals and drugs.
  • Responding to emergencies and stressful situations.
  • Moderate to high noise levels during transport.
