Job Description

General Summary
Under general supervision, administer complex respiratory therapy procedures to evaluate and treat individuals with cardiopulmonary impairments caused by developmental defects, aging, injury, or disease, using respiratory care techniques.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Perform respiratory treatments for adult, pediatric, or neonatal patients, explaining procedures beforehand.
  • Monitor patient signs, symptoms, behavior, and response to treatments, collaborating with physicians on therapeutic plans.
  • Terminate treatment if patient discomfort or medical issues arise.
  • Participate in CPR procedures, including airway management, ventilation, and compression as needed.
  • Administer gases, medications, and therapies per departmental protocols, including oxygen, bronchodilators, and aerosolized medications.
  • Assist with artificial airway management and suctioning.
  • Apply age-specific techniques for different patient populations.
  • In critical care, administer mechanical ventilation and CPAP, adjusting settings under supervision.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of interventions via x-ray and blood gas analysis, monitoring patient condition and notifying physicians as necessary.
  • Ensure proper operation and maintenance of respiratory equipment, calibrate devices, and perform routine checks.
  • Document activities and patient data accurately and report equipment issues for repairs.
  • Collect and interpret diagnostic data, including ABG, ECG, and lab results, to inform treatment adjustments.
  • Provide supervision and training to interns and students as per departmental guidelines.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Associate degree required; Bachelor’s preferred. NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist certification required. Maryland licensure required. CPR certification; ACLS preferred. Two years’ experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of respiratory anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and medical terminology. Skilled in operating respiratory equipment and interpreting diagnostic results. Excellent communication skills and ability to evaluate patient response are essential. Ability to draw arterial blood gases and assess patient performance. Demonstrates understanding of growth and development across lifespan. Participates in departmental initiatives and maintains continuing education credits.
