Job Summary
The Respiratory Therapist II is responsible for medication administration and implementing respiratory care based on expanded knowledge, experience, and the evaluate-and-treat process. The RT II delivers patient care in complex, multiple problem-patient situations, primarily in critical care areas. Responsibilities include protocol ventilator management, independent decision-making, patient, family/support system education, coordination of activities, staff development, and professional growth. The RT II provides care with an understanding of population-specific needs, addressing biological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and educational needs. Participation in the education of new employees and others is also required.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Provides customer service, including patient care, documentation, and education
- Promotes a team approach and positive work environment
- Supports staff and student education
- Performs patient assessments and collaborates with the healthcare team
- Verifies orders and administers aerosolized medications, bronchial hygiene, volume expansion, oxygen therapy
- Manages ventilators, performs weaning, interprets waveforms, and manages airways (intubation, extubation, trach care)
- Conducts arterial blood gas sampling and analysis
- Mentors and precepts new employees, students, and peers
- Assists in invasive and non-invasive procedures, cardiac service procedures, pulmonary diagnostics (location-specific)
- Ensures accurate electronic orders, charting, and charging
- Maintains high patient safety standards and promotes quality improvement initiatives
- Supports evidence-based practice and reviews new policies and procedures
Minimum Education Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program (CoARC or CAAHP) with at least 20 quarter hours of science
- Associate's Degree required; Bachelor's Degree preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required
- Respiratory Care Professional license required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required; BLS Instructor, Provisional BLS, ACLS, and Instructor ACLS required
Experience
- 0-2 years of clinical experience, with at least 6 months in critical care
Skills
- Effective communication, critical thinking, relationship-building with healthcare professionals, and computer proficiency
- Strong customer service, assessment, and communication skills
