Position Summary:
The certified/registered respiratory therapist is a professional who works under the supervision of the Cardiopulmonary Department Manager. Responsible to deliver a high standard of care in the treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. Effectively communicates and interacts with all members of the health care team, including patients, families, cardiopulmonary staff, physicians, nursing staff and other allied health personnel.

Position Accountabilities:

  • Treats patients with administration and therapeutic use of medical gases and administration devices, airway humidification, medicinal and non-medicinal aerosols, broncho-pulmonary drainage.
  • Involved in critical care by drawing and analyzing arterial blood gases, airway management, including endotracheal intubation, ventilatory support and CPR.
  • Performs diagnostic testing including electrocardiography, holter monitoring, pulse oximetry, arterial blood gases, pulmonary function testing, and stress tests.
  • Develops and/or participates in hospital-based and community-wide educational programs such as: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Smoking Cessation, etc.
  • Stays current with respiratory care topics by attending educational programs.
  • Maintains professional certification through continuing education and professional activities.
  • Encourages patients to share information concerning care issues to maximize patient safety.
  • Actively participates as a collaborative member of the healthcare team.
