Job description

We're hiring a Respiratory Therapist (CRT) for the Respiratory Care Services department at the University of Chicago Medicine in Hyde Park, Chicago. This full‑time, day shift position focuses on adult patient care. Student opportunities are available for those enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy program.

Job Summary

In this role, the Certified Respiratory Therapist administers respiratory care treatments, procedures, and protocols under department leadership and physician supervision, including patient assessment, non‑invasive and invasive ventilation, and advanced therapies.

Essential Job Functions

• Administers supplemental oxygen/medical gas therapy per physician orders or departmental protocols, documenting procedures in EPIC.
• Administers intermittent or continuous medication delivery therapy per protocol, accurately documenting in EPIC real time.
• Performs bronchopulmonary hygiene, suctioning, and airway care procedures, including chest physiotherapy, coughing/deep breathing techniques, ventilator Vest, Flutter valve, ExPap, Acapella, and incentive spirometry, with documentation.
• Initiates and maintains non‑invasive ventilation (BIPAP, CPAP, High‑Flow Cannula), assessing patient status and equipment, adjusting for comfort and therapeutic benefit, documenting in EPIC.
• Initiates, maintains, and checks mechanical ventilation status, recommends weaning plans per physician order or protocol, documenting procedures in EPIC timely.
• Manages ventilator settings and reports hemodynamic parameters for weaning and spontaneous breathing trials in EPIC.
• Performs arterial blood gas analysis, troubleshoots analyzers, conducts quality control, reports results accurately within turnaround guidelines.
• Provides patient transport within the facility including transport on oxygen delivery systems or mechanical ventilators.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an approved, accredited respiratory care program (minimum two years). Diploma, Certificate, or Associates Degree from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrated communication and documentation skills.
• Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
• Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in Illinois.
• Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association).
• Preferred: Neonatal Resuscitation, PALS, or ACLS certification, depending on patient population.
