Job description

A day in the life as a respiratory therapist can involve meeting and assessing new patients, as well as administering treatment to and following up with existing patients. RTs should be detail-oriented, patient, compassionate, and possess stellar interpersonal skills as they interact with vulnerable patients who often need as much genuine comfort as they do medical treatment. Respiratory therapists need to have a unique skill set that allows them to multitask while remaining hyper-focused on the needs and conditions of their patients.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Assists with patient’s goals and needs by providing quality care: Conducting pulmonary function tests; assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results; determining respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with patient’s physician.
  • Supports life by administering medicated inhalants; operating and managing mechanical ventilators, BIPAP therapy, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
  • Administers respiratory therapy treatments by performing broncho-pulmonary drainage; assisting with breathing exercises; monitoring physiological and clinical responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, SPO2 and clinical appearance.
  • Is present for all new born deliveries and C-sections, assessing the newborn and providing appropriate intervention when needed. (ventilation, CPAP therapy, suctioning etc.)
  • Assists in discharge planning by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care workers; contributing input during patient care conferences.
  • Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Ensures proper operation of equipment by performing pre-test calibrations and maintenance requirements; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs when needed.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending in-service training programs, educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies..
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal and certification requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
Education, Experience & Certification/Licensure

Required:

  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credentialed by the NBRC
  • Associate degree from a respiratory care education program that is supported or accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)
  • Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) credential

Preferred:

  • Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) credential
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentialed by the NBRC
