Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Downtown Campus department of Respiratory Care is seeking a Respiratory Therapist to perform respiratory therapy duties and collaborate with physicians and nurses to implement care plans.

The position is part‑time, on campus, with a 60% weekday evening shift (18:00–06:00) and rotating Sundays to Thursdays; no weekends or on‑call coverage.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a CoARC approved program or NBRC eligibility.
• Current State of Iowa Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Current CPR certification.
• Obtain registry from NBRC within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provide respiratory therapy duties: oxygen and aerosol therapy, specialty gases, ventilator management.
• Arterial puncture and blood gas analysis.
• Develop and implement patient‑driven respiratory care plans with physicians and nurses.
• Cross‑train with Emergency Department staff for patient assessment and protocols as needed.
• Support inpatient units with respiratory care resources and guidance.

Job description

Position Overview

The University of Iowa Health Care Downtown Campus department of Respiratory Care is seeking a Respiratory Therapist. This position will be responsible for respiratory therapy duties including oxygen and aerosol therapy, administration of specialty gases, application of ventilators, arterial puncture, blood gas analysis, implementing patient‑driven protocols, and other duties as assigned. The therapist will consult with physicians and nurses to develop respiratory care plans for patients and facilitate implementation of physician orders. Emergency Department staff may also cross‑train to assist with patient assessment, treatment protocols, EKGs, lines, labs, and serve as a resource to inpatient units.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of a Commission of Accreditation Respiratory Care (CoARC) approved program or completion of the requirements to become registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
• Possess a current State of Iowa Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Possess a current CPR certification card.
• Obtain registry from the National Board for Respiratory Care within six (6) months of date of hire.

Desired Qualifications

• Greater than one year of recent ICU level experience.
• Experience with an electronic medical record documentation system.
• Currently registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Sign‑On Incentive

Selected candidates with 2+ years of experience may be eligible for a $10,000 sign‑on incentive if all qualifications are met and the candidate commits to at least two years of employment. Candidates with less than 2 years of experience are eligible for a $5,000 sign‑on incentive. Current UI employees are not eligible.

Hours & Schedule

60% weekdays 18:00–06:00. Variable Sunday to Thursday. No weekends or on‑call coverage.

Compensation

• Pay Level: 5
• Starting Salary Minimum: $51,829
• Starting Salary Maximum: Commensurate.
