Responsibilities

• Provide respiratory care to inpatients and outpatients per physician orders.
• Administer medications and gases; manage supply of meds and devices.
• Document care in the EHR; communicate with physicians and team.
• Educate patients and families; participate in MET team activities.
• Support safe ventilation management and following weaning policies.
• Call reports to physicians and other providers as needed.
• Ensure proper storage and use of medical gases and Omnicell retrievals.
• Adhere to safety goals and readbacks of verbal orders and critical values.

Job Summary:

Provide customer sensitive cardiopulmonary care for all age groups, inpatient & outpatient utilizing a wide variety of therapeutic & diagnostic modalities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Uses only approved abbreviations.
• Understands patient safety goals & actions taken.
• Uses 2 patient identifiers before giving treatments, demonstrates process.
• Understands read back of verbal orders/critical lab values & can state process.
• Understands procedure to clarify physician orders.
• Uses standing orders when indicated.
• Accurately calls report to MD as warranted by condition; reports to other providers as needed.
• Reports sentinel events or adverse drug reactions or incidents as warranted.
• Uses final verification before invasive procedures & can verbalize correct process & documents in EHR.
• Reassesses patient in response to changes in condition after intervention as needed & documents in EHR.
• Communicates with & provides education to patients, caregivers, & family members in a timely manner (using respect & dignity when dealing with death & dying) & documents in EHR.
• Administers respiratory care procedures to patients per physician order.
• Administers medical gases as ordered by physician.
• Properly stores & secures medical gas cylinders.
• Provide patient education to adult patients & family members.
• Perform diagnostic testing as per physician order based on training.
• Participates on hospital MET team.
• Integrate use of the Cerner system into work assignments.
• Access medications correctly from Omnicell.
• Initiate and maintain mechanical ventilation. Follow weaning & management policies when adjusting or modifying procedures.
• Perform blood sampling following CLIA, OSHA & regulatory & manufacturer requirements.
• Knowledge of look alike/sound alike meds – can give examples of such.
• Understands what meds can be given by discipline.
• Assures meds are stored appropriately according to regulation.
• Uses Omnicell to obtain waste & return medications.
• Demonstrates proper use of Bar Code scanning.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Completed American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
• Able to operate a wide variety of respiratory therapy & diagnostic test equipment (including, but not limited to, mechanical ventilators, air compressors, EKG machine, stress testing equipment, oxygen delivery devices, & emergency resuscitation equipment).
• Strong customer service skills.
• Effectively communicates both verbal & written.
• Able to multi-task & prioritize.
• Able to operate basic office equipment.
