Job summary

University of California- Davis Health is seeking a Respiratory Care Supervisor to lead and coordinate night shift operations, ensuring safe, effective delivery of respiratory care across the medical center. The role encompasses staffing, equipment, and clinical expertise alignment with patient needs under a complex academic health system.

The ideal candidate will hold a California RCP license and an RRT credential, with BLS and PALS, at least 3 years in acute care.

Qualifications

  • Current California Respiratory Practitioner (RCP) State License.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credential.
  • AHA or Red Cross BLS/UC Davis Health CPR.
  • AHA/PALS.
  • Higher Education Degree (Baccalaureate or above) or in progress.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as an RCP in Acute Care Hospital.
  • Knowledge of basic and advanced cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures and data interpretation.
  • Knowledge of respiratory care equipment and applications.
  • Pharmacology knowledge related to respiratory care and cardiopulmonary system.
  • Knowledge of mechanical ventilation applications.
  • Ability to interpret results with other health professionals.
  • Effective communication with patients and staff.
  • Independent work and time management.
  • Infection control and safety compliance knowledge.
  • Basic computer skills: data entry, e-mail, EMR.
  • Ability to teach and mentor.
  • Working knowledge of management and chain of command.

Job Summary

The Respiratory Care Supervisor is a clinical and operational leader who serves as a frontline representative of the Respiratory Care Leadership Team and is accountable for the safe, effective, and reliable delivery of respiratory care across the medical center. Working within a complex academic health system, the Supervisor translates departmental standards, organizational priorities, and professional practice expectations into consistent clinical excellence. The Supervisor provides visible leadership across the assigned shift, ensuring staffing, resources, equipment, and clinical expertise are aligned with patient needs. The Supervisor responds to changing acuity and operational demands, anticipates barriers to care, and takes decisive action when patient safety, service reliability, or team performance is at risk. The Supervisor fosters a culture of accountability, professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement by coaching and mentoring staff, providing meaningful feedback, recognizing excellence, and addressing performance concerns. The successful leader demonstrates both clinical authority and servant leadership, setting clear expectations while remaining accessible, supportive, and committed to the success of the team. Through rounding, observation, audit, and data review, the Supervisor ensures compliance with clinical, regulatory, documentation, quality, safety, and operational standards. The Supervisor collaborates with physicians, nursing, and other clinical and operational leaders to resolve complex patient care and system issues. The Supervisor maintains clinical competency and participates in direct patient care as needed while providing leadership across a highly specialized service supporting patients of all ages and acuities, including critical care, neonatal and pediatric care, emergency and trauma services, burn care, advanced mechanical ventilation, and other specialized cardiopulmonary services.

The ideal candidate is a clinically credible, accountable, and engaged professional who demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning, evidence-based practice, professional development, and the advancement of Respiratory Care through education, quality improvement, professional organizations, research, advocacy, or innovation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current California Respiratory Practitioner (RCP) State License
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credential
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Higher Education Degree (Baccalaureate or above) or in progress
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience as an RCP in an Acute Care Hospital.
  • Skills in performing basic and advanced cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures and calculations, collects and interprets data to facilitate objective patient assessment and effective care planning.
  • Strong knowledge in the fundamentals of respiratory care equipment and application.
  • Strong knowledge of respiratory care equipment and application.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacology related to respiratory care and the cardiopulmonary system.
  • Knowledge of various applications of mechanical ventilation.
  • Ability to assist other health care professionals in the interpretation and clinical application of results.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity and a respectful manner toward patients, visitors.
  • Ability to demonstrate effectiveness in spoken and written communications.
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve and exhibit good time management practices.
  • Knowledgeable of and in compliance with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the department and/or work unit and the Medical Center.
  • Basic computer skills: data entry, e-mail, E.M.R.
  • Knowledge of and ability to teach and mentor.
  • Working knowledge of basic management regarding chain of command.
  • Skills to maintain reliable work habits, attendance, and completed assignments.
  • Ability to prioritize patient's care based on: emergent needs, patient safety, resources available to meet identified needs, routine care.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive and positive working relationships with all team members.
  • Continuing knowledge of maintenance and development of clinical skills and technical competency in Adult/Pediatric, Emergency and Trauma respiratory care, applications, procedures and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with intra and inter departmental teams.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (JCAHO, Title 22, HCFA. CMS).
